STILLWATER, Okla. -- Recording its largest fall recruiting class in four years, the Oklahoma State men's basketball team signed five players to letters of intent Wednesday.
The Cowboys added David Anderson, Terrence Crawford, Ellis "Bernard" Kidd, Jack Marlow and Ivan McFarlin to their 2000-01 roster on the first day of the fall signing period. The last time OSU signed as many players was fall 1995, when another five-person class, including current seniors Joe Adkins, Desmond Mason and Alex Webber, joined the program.
The Cowboys' fall 1999 recruits have already been rated at the top of an excellent Big 12 class and as high as third in the nation by some publications.
"We're very pleased that these five young men have joined us this season," said OSU coach Eddie Sutton. "This is probably the most athletic recruiting class to sign with us in my 10 years here, and each of these players are also good people as well. They should help us begin to rebuild after the loss of six seniors this season. My three assistant coaches really did a super job in the recruitment of this class."
Anderson, a 6-7 guard/forward out of Chatham, Va. (Hargrave Military Academy), averaged 18 points for Hargrave as a junior. A native of Levittown, Puerto Rico, who moved to the U.S. in summer 1998, he was a co-winner of the slam dunk award at the NBA Players Association Camp in Princeton, N.J., last summer. Anderson will play with the Puerto Rican national team in summer 2000.
Crawford, a 6-6 swingman from Oklahoma City (McGuinness HS), averaged close to 18 points and 10 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game as a junior last season. As a senior, he will try to guide McGuinness to a third straight Class 4A state basketball championship. Crawford is rated by Midwest Basketball as the state's top player and a top-60 prospect nationally.
Coming out of Dallas (James Madison HS), the 6-4 Kidd is rated by some publications as the top shooting guard in Texas. As a junior, he helped lead his team to a 29-5 record, averaging 14.8 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game, earning All-4A District 13 honors. Also a high jumper on his high school track team, Kidd is coached in basketball by his father, Ellis Sr.
Marlow, who committed to the OSU program as a junior, is a 6-11 Tulsa native currently attending Union HS. He averaged 18.1 points and 10.0 rebounds last season for Union last season, helping lead the Redskins to a 22-4 record and a state quarterfinal appearance.
McFarlin is a top-40 recruit out of Sugar Land, Texas (Willow Ridge HS), is a 6-7 forward. He averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds per game as a junior for a Willow Ridge team that went 33-3 last season. A long-armed, active player, McFarlin is also a strong student, boasting a GPA well above 3.0.
The Cowboys (No. 22 AP, No. 25 ESPN/USA Today) open their 1999-2000 season Wednesday night when they host Athletes First in an exhibition contest.
