Cowgirls Take First At Oral Roberts Classic

STILLWATER, Okla. - The Cowgirl harriers brought home their first win of the season this afternoon after dominating the Oral Roberts University Classic in Tulsa, Okla.
Hanna Smedstad claimed the first-place spot, for the third time this season. She finished with a time of 17:57.35 on the 5,000m course, 57 seconds ahead of the second-place runner, Southwest Missouri State's Camille Wise. Smedstad did not compete with the Cowgirls last week in the Cowboy Jamboree due to a dislocated shoulder. She has won every meet that she has participated in for the 1999 season, including the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational and the SMU Cross Country Invitational.
"This was the way for Hanna to come back after her shoulder injury. She hasn't worked out very hard in about two weeks, so this was great," said Coach Catrina Acosta.
Sara Wells captured the no. 2 spot for the Cowgirls, placing third in the race with a time of 19:02.49. Alexandra Lindquist, in her first appearance of the 1999 season, placed fifth with a time of 19:11.93. Lindquist, the 1998 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, has been out all season with stress fractures in her feet.
"The soft ground out here helped cushion my feet a little," Lindquist said. "It hurts just a little bit."
Araceli Davila ran in the no. 4 spot for her team, placing eighth overall in 19:53.59. Karla Dennis was the fifth Cowgirl across the line, placing 23rd with a time of 21:30.07. Shavon Young, Lindsey Davis, Vera Waller, Lindsey Tate, Tiffany Hurst, Caren Eichor and Lindsay Hall also participated for the Cowgirls.
"This is the time the whole team has come out and run together. It was really nice to get everyone out.
"Today's performance was really encouraging. We were really strong. We're going to have to close that gap between the no. 4 and no. 5 spot, though," Acosta said.
The Cowgirls will travel to Tampa, Fla., to compete in the Oct. 16 meet at the University of South Florida.
