Cowgirls Fall To Jayhawks, 4-2

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas scored three goals in 12 minutes in the first half to hand Oklahoma State a 4-2 defeat in Big 12 women's soccer action Friday afternoon.
The Jayhawks rode the momentum of their 3-0 halftime lead to a crucial Big 12 victory. The top eight teams in the Big 12 at the end of the regular season advance to the conference tournament in San Antonio, Texas, and going into today's match Oklahoma State was tied with Kansas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma for eighth place.
Kansas came out firing, scoring three first half goals on nine shots. Junior transfer, Hilla Rantala took a pass from Colleen Colvin to beat the Cowgirls starting goalkeeper Laurel Catlett-King one-on-one in the 32nd minute to give the Jayhawks a 1-0 lead. Kansas sophomore Natalie Hoogveld found net seven minutes later off assists from Rantala and Meghann Haven. Two minutes before the half, Haven connected with a ball from Colvin for the Jayhawks' game-winning goal.
Oklahoma State came out in the second half with much more intensity outscoring Kansas 2-1. Both Cowgirl goals resulted from corner kicks, which OSU took a SuperTarget Field record eleven of. In the 58th minute Mercy Morrical found net for Oklahoma State after the Andi Lute corner kick.
The Jayhawks responded when Hoogveld scored again, tying the KU single-game scoring record for the second time in her career in the 76th minute.
With ten minutes remaining in the match, Kansas goalkeeper Betsy Pollard punched in another corner kick taken by Oklahoma State's Andi Lute in an attempt to clear the ball. The goal was credited to Lute, her fourth of the season.
Kansas improves to 7-5 overall, 2-3 in the Big 12 and Oklahoma State falls to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12. The Cowgirls return to action on Sunday, Oct. 10, against Missouri at 1:00 p.m. in Columbia, Mo.
