BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Third-ranked Charles Howell kept alive his streak of rounds in the 60s Tuesday to win the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate by a single stroke.
Howell, who set a career low with a score of 202 at last week?s Red River Classic, bested that personal best by one stroke and won the JPNI ? his second career title ? while recording his seventh consecutive round below 70.
Howell?s 12-under-par 201, which led the Cowboys to a fifth-place team finish, ties for the third-lowest individual score in Oklahoma State?s storied men?s golf history and is the best score by a Cowboy in 15 seasons. His 202 last week had been the seventh-best score on the OSU books until his repeat performance this week.
Howell carded a 67 on the tournament?s final day and was matched by teammate Anders Hultman, who moved up to 18th place individually at 2-over-par 215. The dual 67s helped OSU improve on its first- and second-round scores by 15 strokes and move up three spots to finish in fifth as a team with a final score of 849, three strokes under par. Clemson and UNLV tied for the 54-hole lead at 835, and Clemson won the title on the second playoff hole.
J.C. DeLeon continued to impress as a true freshman, finishing 30th individually at 217. Edward Loar was 34th at 218, and Landry Mahan, who carded a 69 Tuesday, was 36th at 219.
OSU concludes its fall season Nov. 5-7 at the GolfWorld/Palmetto Dunes tournament in Hilton Head, S.C.
