RECORDS, RANKINGS -- Oklahoma State is 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 Conference play ahead of this week's game against K-State. The Cowboys won their first two of the '99 season before losing to Mississippi State and Nebraska, both on the road. OSU rebounded last week for a 41-21 win over Texas Tech on Lewis Field. Kansas State will come to Stillwater with a perfect 6-0 overall record and a 3-0 mark in league play. The Wildcats stepped out of league play last week with a 40-0 win over Utah State in Manhattan.
HOMECOMING -- Oklahoma State will celebrate its last Homecoming of the millennium this week, capped with Saturday's football game against the Wildcats. OSU's Homecoming is annually one of the largest in the nation, attracting thousands to Friday night's walkaround and campus-wide activities Friday and Saturday.
CROWD/TICKETS -- A capacity crowd is expected for Saturday's game between Oklahoma State and Kansas State. With the seats that were in the east end zone now gone because of construction, the official Lewis Field capacity is 48,500. As of last Friday, only a few hundred donor-level tickets remained for the game, and fans may purchase them by calling the Athletic Ticket Office at (405) 744-5745 or 1-877-ALL-4-OSU.
THE EARLY BIRD -- For the third time in six games, Oklahoma State will kick off a football game at about the time you should be finishing your Belgian waffle. The Cowboys are appearing on the Big 12 Syndicated Game of the Week for the third time (Tulsa, Nebraska and Kansas State). Today is the fourth televised game of the season for OSU.
ON THE AIR -- Drew Goodman, Keith Jackson and Jim Knox are the TV talent for this week's game, while the incomparable Dr. Robert Steinfield will once again be the on-site producer. The Big 12 syndicated telecast can be seen in Oklahoma City on KWTV (9) and in Tulsa on KOTV (6). The game will also be broadcast live on the Cowboy Radio Network with Bill Teegins and Tom Dirato. The Cowboy Network is a division of Learfield Sports. The network pregame show begins one hour before kickoff and ends with a live call-in show with coach Bob Simmons.
OSU LAST WEEK -- The Cowboys worked through an open week. In fact, it was Oklahoma State's second open date of the season. OSU worked normally Monday through Thursday, had a conditioning practice on Friday and took the weekend off. Regular game-week preparations for the Kansas State game will begin Monday afternoon.
TWO OPEN DATES NOT SO RARE -- Oklahoma State enjoyed its second open date of the season last week. The Cowboys were idle Sept. 25, one week after losing at Mississippi State and a week before facing Nebraska in Lincoln. The last time OSU had two open playing dates in one season was 1996. That season, the Cowboys were open on Sept. 28 and again on Nov. 16. The Cowboys were 1-1 that season after open dates, losing at Texas and defeating Baylor on Lewis Field.
TEXAS TECH REVIEW -- In what might have been Oklahoma State's most complete effort of the season to date, the Cowboys rolled to a 41-21 Big 12 win over Texas Tech on Lewis Field. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak to the Red Raiders and put the Pokes right back in the thick of the race for the Big 12 South title. The Cowboys took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Sophomore quarterback B.J. Tiger rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown and passed for 203 yards and two touchdowns to spark an OSU offensive effort that netted 452 total yards. Defensive back Alvin Porter led the Cowboy defense with four tackles, two for losses, one interception and a quarterback sack.
KANSAS STATE LAST WEEK -- While Oklahoma State was idle, Kansas State stepped out of Big 12 Conference action to post a 40-0 win over Utah State in Manhattan. Joe Hall, a 280-pound running back, rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Wildcat victory. The Wildcats mastered the Aggies with first-half field goals. Jamie Rheem connected four times in the first half, the longest from 57 yards away, to give KSU a 12-0 advantage at intermission. The Cats cemented the win in the second half with the two touchdowns by Hall plus a 32-yard touchdown pass from Jonathan Beasley to Quincy Morgan and a 35-yard interception return by Milton Proctor. Kansas State rushed for 277 yards on 59 carries and passed for 163 yards on just nine completions. The Wildcat defense was stifling, allowing the visitors minus seven yards on the ground and 162 in the air. Utah State was able to complete just 12 of its 43 pass attempts.
BIG 12 SOUTH ... OPEN WIDE -- As Oklahoma State begins a stretch of six games that will conclude the 1999 regular season, the race for the Big 12 South is wide open and crowded at the top. Each school in the south has at least one league loss. Texas A&M, Texas and Texas Tech are tied for the division lead with 2-1 records. Oklahoma State and Oklahoma are both 1-1. This week, in addition to OSU's game with Kansas State, Texas A&M travels to Oklahoma, Texas hosts Nebraska and Texas Tech is at Baylor. With the second half of the season ready to start, two Big 12 teams (Nebraska and Kansas State) are already bowl-eligible, with Texas A&M and Texas each just one win from the magic number six.
MURDERERS ROW -- This week begins a stretch of OSU's 1999 schedule that will feature three straight games against nationally ranked opposition. Kansas State, OSU's Saturday morning opponent on Lewis Field, is 6-0 and ranked seventh by both the Associated Press and the coaches. After this week's game, the Cowboys travel to Texas A&M to face the Aggies, ranked 10th by the coaches and 13th in the AP Poll. Following the journey to College Station, OSU returns to Lewis Field to tackled the Texas Longhorns, ranked 16th in the AP list and 18th by the coaches.
AND IT'S ALREADY BEEN TOUGH -- The Cowboys have already faced two teams ranked highly in both polls. Nebraska, 38-14 winners over OSU two weeks ago in Lincoln, are unbeaten and ranked third in both polls. Mississippi State, which defeated OSU in Starkville earlier this season, is also unbeaten and ranked 11th by the coaches and 12th by AP.
UPDATING THE 1999 OPPOSITION -- Oklahoma State's 1999 opponents have a combined record of 39-29 going into this weekend's play. Three of OSU's 1999 opponents are still unbeaten after six weeks of regular season play.

HOME STREAK STILL INTACT -- Oklahoma State successfully defended its home turf against non-conference opponents again in 1999. For the eighth straight season, the Cowboys did not lose to a nonconference opponent on Lewis Field. the Pokes will start the 2000 season with a 16-game winning streak at home against nonleague foes.

HEAD COACH BOB SIMMONS -- Oklahoma State's head football coach is five games into his fifth season and will be coaching his 52nd OSU game when the Cowboys host Kansas State this week. Coach Simmons will bring a career mark of 25-26 into Saturday game. Simmons came to Oklahoma State from Colorado, where he was assistant head coach for Bill McCartney. He guided OSU to a bowl game just three years into his tenure and was the 1997 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year.
CONTRACT EXTENSION -- Earlier this season, one day before the Cowboys disposed of Tulsa on Lewis Field, the Oklahoma State Board of Regents approved a contract extension for Bob Simmons that will keep him as OSU's head football coach through the 2005 season.
COACH SIMMONS ON THE INTERNET -- Oklahoma State's head coach recently launched his own web site (http: //www.bobsimmons.com), Bob Simmons' Cowboy Corner. Portions of the proceeds from Simmons' site go to the National Kidney Foundation of Oklahoma, Inc., and the OSU Foundation.
SIMMONS ON RADIO/TV -- Oklahoma State's head football coach has shows on both TV and radio each week through the 1999 season. The Bob Simmons Television Show will air Sunday at 10:30 p.m. on KOCB (34) in Oklahoma City. Other airings include Monday at 8:30 on KWEM (31) in Stillwater, Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Tulsa Cable Channel 9, Wednesday at 8:30 on KWEM (31) in Stillwater and Thursday at 3 p.m. on Fox Sports Southwest. MILESTONES UNDER SIMMONS -- Oklahoma State's football fortunes have soared since Simmons became the school's 20th head coach Dec. 4, 1994. Below are just a few of those milestones.
Noting the Cowboys
PORTER HAVING ALL-LEAGUE SEASON -- Oklahoma State defensive back Alvin Porter continues to have a season that should warrant consideration for All-Big 12 honors. Porter, who led the Cowboys' defensive effort against Texas Tech, has impressive numbers through five games of the 1999 season. His 24 total tackles lead the defense as do his three interceptions and seven passes broken up.
Porter's season to date:
Game UT AT Total For Loss Int. BRUP Louisiana-Lafayette 4 2 6 1 Tulsa 3 2 5 1-2 2 Mississippi State 6 1 7 2 1 Nebraska 0 3 3 1 Texas Tech 2 2 4 2-10 1 2 Totals 15 10 25 3-12 3 7
D-BACKS STILL TOP TACKLERS -- Alvin Porter isn't the only OSU defensive back with impressive numbers through the first five games of the season. Porter, J.B. Flowers and Adam Edwards are OSU's top three tacklers. Flowers has 21 total stops while Edwards is tied with linebacker Dwayne Levels with 20. Porter and Flowers have combined for five of OSU's seven total interceptions.
T-RICHARDSON ON THE BRINK -- Another Cowboy worthy of All-Big 12 consideration as a punt returner is Terance Richardson. With 321 yards on 22 returns (a 14.59 yards-per-return average, ranked 10th nationally) through five games, Richardson is already tied for fourth on the season punt-return yardage list with David Hankins. Richardson needs 74 yards to move past Jim Spavital into third, 102 yards to move into second place past Bennie Goodwin and 201 yards to move past R.W. McQuarters and establish a new single-season record for punt return yardage.
ALL-PURPOSE FOBBS -- Tailback Jamaal Fobbs is not only OSU's leading rusher through five games, he is No. 2 in receiving and is the Cowboys' leading kickoff returner. On the ground, Fobbs has 233 yards on 53 carries. He is averaging 4.4 yards per carry and almost 47 yards per game. He has caught 11 passes for 120 yards and one touchdown and is averaging 10.9 yards per catch. He has returned nine kicks for 196 yards, an average of 21.8 yards per return.
FOBBS ON THE CAREER LIST -- With 233 yards through five games this season, Jamaal Fobbs now has 1,488 yards for his OSU career. He will go into this week's game against Kansas State 19th on the career rushing list, just 19 yards from passing Bobby Cole and moving into 18th on that elite list.
WRIGHT, KNAULS ON BUTKUS LIST -- Two of OSU's linebackers, Wright and senior captain Tarrell Knauls, are on the watch list for the Butkus Award, given annually to the top linebacker in the country. Below is a capsule look at their outstanding OSU careers:
Kenyatta Wright Tarrell Knauls Year UT-AT For Loss Year UT-AT For Loss 1996 11-61 4-12 1996 13-19 5-35 1997 32-40 10-32 1997 19-22 7-34 1998 48-23 10-45 1998 34-25 11-45 1999 7-10 3-12 1999 6-11 1- 4 Total 98-134 27-101 Total 72-77 24-118
NATHAN PASSES TURNER, BLACKMAN ON RUSHING LIST -- Tailback Nathan Simmons spent the summer of 1999 going through a vigorous rehab program for major knee surgery last December. Five games into his final OSU season, Simmons is on the verge of becoming the 13th player in Oklahoma State history to rush for 2,000 or more career yards. The son of head coach Bob Simmons now has 1,878 career yards, just 122 yards shy of the 2,000 mark. He is 14th on the all-time OSU rushing list, 82 yards short of Andre Richardson's 13th-place mark of 1,960 yards.
Nathan's OSU Career:

SYDNES' SCORING -- Senior kicker Tim Sydnes began the season sixth on the career scoring list and is quickly adding to those totals. Earlier this season against Tulsa, Sydnes connected on all five PATs and was a perfect three-of-three in the field goal department. He was the Big 12 Conference Specialty Player of the Week after that game. For the season, he has hit six of 11 field goals and 11 of 11 extra points. Through three-plus seasons, Sydnes has scored 236 points and trails No. 5 Thurman Thomas by 30 points. He is already the third-most-prolific kick scorer in school history, trailing only Cary Blanchard and Larry Roach.
OSU's All-Time Scorers
1. Barry Sanders 330 2. Cary Blanchard 315 3. Larry Roach 290 4. Terry Miller 270 5. Thurman Thomas 266 6. Tim Sydnes 236
MALLORY TURNS INT INTO TD -- Defensive tackle Cortney Mallory came up with an interception against Mississippi State in Starkville. Mallory not only intercepted the pass, he returned it 46 yards for OSU's only touchdown against the Bulldogs. It was the first interception by an OSU defensive lineman since 1997, when the same Mallory intercepted a pass against Louisiana-Lafayette.
AS FOR THE DEFENSIVE ENDS... -- One of the early highlights of Oklahoma State's 1999 season has been the play of the defensive ends. Zac Warner, Kevin Williams and Juqua Thomas have combined for 19 tackles behind the line, including nine sacks. Thomas, a junior college transfer from Northeastern A&M, leads the team with nine tackles for minus 52 yards and 3.5 sacks for minus 34 yards. Warner has five tackles for minus 26 yards and Williams has five for minus 21 yards.
NEXT WEEK -- Oklahoma State travels to College Station, Texas, next weekend for a battle with nationally ranked Texas A&M. The Cowboys then return home to face Texas on Nov. 6 and Kansas on Nov. 13 before ending the regular season with games at Baylor on Nov. 20 and Oklahoma on Nov. 27.
DEFENSE PART ONE: TOTAL YARDAGE -- OSU's defense stopped almost everything in the season-opening victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. The Cowboys allowed just 61 yards total offense, the second-lowest amount ever by an OSU opponent. The school-record total-defense performance came in 1947, when OSU held Kansas State to 29 yards. The Cowboys have continued to impress defensively throughout the season and currently rank fourth in the nation in total defense (244.4 ypg) and second in the Big 12. OSU and its opponents account for four of the top five defenses in the nation (No. 2 Mississippi State, No. 3 Nebraska, No. 4 OSU and No. 5 Kansas State) and six of the top 10 (adding No. 8 Texas A&M and No. 10 Texas).
DEFENSE PART TWO: AGAINST THE RUN -- The Cowboys held Tulsa, which had come into the game off consecutive 300-yard rushing performances dating to last season, to minus-20 yards on the ground, the second-lowest number ever recorded by an OSU opponent. The school record was the 33 yards in net losses suffered by Kansas State in 1980. OSU also stuffed Texas Tech's Sammy Morris, who had gained 170 yards on the ground the previous week against Texas A&M's stout defense, to just 40 yards on 16 carries. The Cowboys rank 15th nationally against the rush, allowing 93.2 yards per game.
DEFENSE PART THREE: AGAINST THE PASS -- OSU's secondary was widely believed to be its weakness in 1998. However, the first five games of 1999 have shown a change in that trend as OSU has allowed just 151.2 passing yards per game to rank 10th in the nation. OSU's opponents' pass-efficiency rating is a mere 90.0, the seventh-lowest mark in the country. Part of the Cowboys' stinginess against the pass has had to do with their quarterback pressure: OSU has recorded 18 sacks in five games.
NICE START -- The Texas Tech game marked just the second time this season that OSU had scored a touchdown on its first possession, and OSU scored TDs on its first two drives for the first time this season. In fact, until Terance Richardson and B.J. Tiger scored on running plays against the Red Raiders, the Cowboys had not scored two touchdowns in the first quarter of any game this year. After gaining 176 yards total offense in the entire game against Mississippi State and 273 against Nebraska (see the above note on the strength of OSU's and its opponents' defenses), the Cowboys earned 292 yards against Texas Tech in the first half alone. The Cowboys finished the Tech contest with a season-high 452 yards, three more than their combined total in the previous two games.
NOTING THE COWBOYS -- In addition to his punt-return duties, Terance Richardson has made a name for himself as a runner in the past two games. Before the Nebraska game, Richardson had no career rushes. However, in the past three games, he has three carries for 72 yards and a touchdown ... Senior FB Kevin Brown collected a tipped pass in the end zone against Texas Tech for the first TD reception of his career and his first catch of any kind since 1996 ... Jamaal Fobbs' 51-yard second-quarter touchdown reception against Texas Tech was his fourth career TD catch but his first since his freshman season of 1997, it was also the long reception of his career ... OSU scored 31 first-half points against Texas Tech, the Cowboys' best output in an opening half since the 1993 season opener against Southwest Missouri State, when OSU scored 38 points before the break.
This Week's Opponent
THE SERIES -- Oklahoma State and Kansas State will meet Saturday afternoon for the 52nd time since the series began in 1908. Despite a recent dominance by Kansas state, OSU leads the overall series by a 32-18-0 count, and the Cowboys own a 16-7-0 advantage in games played in Stillwater. Kansas State comes into this week's game with a seven-game winning streak over OSU, dating back to 1990. The Cowboys' last win over K-State came in 1989 in Stillwater by a 17-13 count.
COACH BILL SNYDER -- When Bill Snyder took over the reins of the Kansas State football program in 1989, the Wildcats had won just nine games combined in the previous six years, now, K-State has won nine games or more in each of the past six seasons. Snyder is 83-39-1 in his 11th season at Kansas State and has taken the Wildcats to six bowl games, an impressive feat considering that KSU had been to just one postseason game before Snyder's arrival.
CLOSE IS NICE, BUT... -- The Wildcats have fashioned their seven-game win streak over OSU despite some extremely competitive games, last year's 50-22 K-State victory in Manhattan notwithstanding. The past four games in Stillwater, in particular, have been nailbiters. K-State won 23-17 in 1995, 21-17 in 1993 and 36-26 in 1991, and OSU won 17-13 in 1989.
RECORD AGAINST KSU THE BEST -- Oklahoma State's all-time record against Kansas State (32-19) gives the Cowboys a .627 winning percentage, and that's the best for OSU against any Big 12 Conference opponent. Prior to Kansas State winning the first of its seven straight from OSU in 1990, the Cowboys had won six straight and 16 of the previous 18 games between the two schools.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING -- Kansas State used several big plays -- four touchdowns went for over 20 yards, and three went for over 45 -- to win its seventh straight over OSU in a game played in Manhattan on Oct. 17, 1998. K-State quarterback Michael Bishop passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more, totaling 376 yards of offense -- 246 of that coming on third down. OSU gained 328 yards and earned 21 first downs against the nation's top-ranked defense but was outgained by Bishop himself.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING -- Here's a look at how OSU and Kansas State match up statistically. National and Big 12 rankings are listed where appropriate.
