STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's wrestling team will enter the 1999-2000 season ranked sixth, according to both major preseason wrestling polls announced earlier this week.
Amateur Wrestling News and Intermat Wrestling, the two-major college wrestling publications, both tabbed the Pokes as the country's sixth best team. Big 12 foe Iowa State garner number one rankings in both polls, followed by in-state rival and five-time defending national champion Iowa.
Several of the Cowboys opponents this season are listed in both polls. Included on that list: Iowa State, Iowa, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Penn State, Michigan State, Northern Iowa, Arizona State and Wisconsin.
The Pokes come into the season with a 68-dual winning streak but return only one All-American, Reggie Wright who is ranked third by AWN and fourth by Intermant. The Cowboys' Dave Anderton who will begin his second year as the starter at 285 is ranked fourth in both polls.
Other Cowboys earning preseason ranking are Mark Munoz who is ranked seventh at 197 by Intermat and eight by AWN. Pat Popolizio is ranked ninth at 197 by Intermat, but coaches plan to move him down to the 184-pound weight class for the upcoming season. The Cowboys 165-pound starter Ty Wilcox will enter the 1999-2000 season ranked 11th by Intermat and 13th by AWN.
