Tyler Caldwell is entering his eighth season on staff at Oklahoma State and second as an assistant following a six-year stint as the program’s recruiting coordinator.
Caldwell’s first season as an assistant saw Daton Fix and Dustin Plott each finish as a national runner-up, while Izzak Olejnik finished fifth at 165 pounds to give the Cowboys their most placers since 2021. Fix’s final season in Stillwater included becoming the Big 12’s first five-time champion and first five-time All-American in program history. The Cowboys excelled in dual competition throughout the regular season, winning their first 14 duals for the program’s highest win total in five years. Three of those victories came against top-five teams as part of OSU’s nation-leading 12 ranked wins on the year. OSU also set a program average attendance record with 5,871 fans per dual and hosted their first sellout at Gallagher-Iba Arena since 2019. Oklahoma State would go on to finish second at the Big 12 Championships with 141.5 points, the most by a runner-up in league history.
While serving as recruiting coordinator, the Cowboys consistently signed classes ranked in the top-five nationally. In Caldwell’s final season in the role, OSU inked the top-ranked class that was highlighted by the No. 1 pound-for-pound wrestler. Caldwell also played a major role in the Cowboys signing the top class in 2020, consisting of the top pound-for-pound wrestler in the nation.
Since Caldwell was added to the staff in 2018, OSU has completed a pair of undefeated dual seasons in 2019 and 2021 and compiled a 92-13 record. Cowboy wrestlers have combined for 28 All-America finishes at the NCAA Championships while bringing home 22 conference titles. The Cowboys won the conference team championship in each of Caldwell’s first four years on staff, and he also saw AJ Ferrari win a 197-pound national title in 2021. Caldwell’s tenure also oversaw standout Daton Fix excel on the international stage with two World Championship appearances and a silver medal in 2021.
As a collegiate wrestler, Caldwell transferred to Stillwater ahead of the 2013 campaign after competing at the University of Oklahoma as a freshman and sophomore. Earning All-America honors in all four years of his career, Caldwell was a two-time NCAA finalist and finished his career with a 126-29 record, including a 63-9 mark at OSU. He also won the Big 12 title at 165 pounds in both of his seasons as a Cowboy, while securing bonus points in over 40% of his matches.
Following his graduation from Oklahoma State in 2014, Caldwell served as a volunteer assistant at West Virginia during the 2015-16 season.
Caldwell also found success on the international stage, winning a University World title in 2014 and placing third at the U.S. Open that same year. He also placed fourth at the U.S. Open the following year.
A Wichita, Kan., native, Caldwell has been a part of the Cowboy wrestling program for over a decade.
