On June 5, 2020, the NCAA Committee on Infractions placed the Oklahoma State University men’s basketball program on probation for a three-year period. This and other penalties were delayed while Oklahoma State University appealed to the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee. After this appeal decision, the program’s probationary period began on November 3, 2021, and will end on November 2, 2024.
Being on probation means that if the men’s basketball program violates other NCAA legislation within the three-year period, the probation could be extended and additional sanctions applied. The penalties related to this probation include a one-year postseason ban, the loss of three scholarships over a three-year period and other recruiting and financial restrictions. The violations that resulted in this probation are as follows:
Â
Oklahoma State agrees that the former associate head coach violated NCAA legislation. However, the institution also recognizes that the former associate head men’s basketball coach acted entirely on his own without any intended or actual benefit to the institution and its athletics program, no other institutional staff was aware or involved in the actions of the coach, no recruiting violations took place, no student-athletes participated while ineligible, and no failure to monitor or lack of institutional control occurred. It is also worthwhile to note that this case did not include any allegations or findings related to academic fraud or impropriety.
A complete report on this matter from the NCAA Committee on Infractions can be found through this link. This report includes a complete list of violations on this matter and all penalties related to the resolution of this infractions case.
Oklahoma State University is fully committed to compliance with NCAA rules and maintains a comprehensive rules compliance program to assist our prospects, student-athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters in understanding and abiding by these rules. • A former associate head men’s basketball coach violated NCAA legislation relating to ethical conduct and representation when he accepted cash bribes in exchange for arranging meetings for financial advisors with a student-athlete at another institution and that student-athlete's mother, and arranging a meeting with an OSU student athlete and he violated NCAA extra benefits legislation when he knowingly provided cash gifts of $300 to an Oklahoma State University men’s basketball student-athlete. The Committee on Infractions determined that the coach acted entirely for his own benefit and not to benefit the institution.
