Cowboy Baseball Drops Regional Opener
May 29, 2026 | Cowboy Baseball
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Second-seeded Oklahoma State came up short in its NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional opener Friday as the 19th-ranked Cowboys dropped an 8-5 contest to No. 3 seed USC Upstate at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 37-21 and will face tonight's Alabama/Alabama State loser in an elimination game Saturday at 1 p.m.
OSU outhit the Spartans in the contest but left 13 runners stranded on base and committed three errors leading to a pair of unearned runs.
Remo Indomenico led the Pokes with a 2-for-5 day that included a home run and three RBIs, while Garrett Shull and Evan Saunders also drove in runs for the Cowboys.
Ethan Lund took the loss on the mound to fall to 5-3. In his 16th start of the season, the southpaw allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings as he gave up just two hits but walked four.
Stormy Rhodes came out of the bullpen and worked the final 6 1/3 innings, striking out six and giving up three runs on four hits.
The Spartans (34-28) got on the scoreboard early, plating three runs in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. After walking the first three batters, Lund uncorked a wild pitch to allow a run to score before a passed ball made the score 2-0. A double play brought home a third run before Lund was able to get out of the inning.
Upstate added to its lead in the second. Wylie Waters picked up the Spartans first hit of the game with a double off the top of the wall in center field, advanced to third on a groundout and then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
The Pokes rallied to knot things up in the bottom of the frame. Following a hit by pitch and a walk, Saunders brought home OSU's first run with a single before Indomenico stepped to the plate and launched a three-run bomb to right field. The freshman's second round-tripper of the season made the score 4-4.
Upstate went back on top in the third. With two outs, Rhodes replaced Lund on the mound, and the first batter he faced, Jake Armsey, picked up an RBI single to give the Spartans a 5-4 advantage.
A pair of defensive miscues proved costly in the fourth as OSU's deficit grew. After Kollin Ritchie dropped a fly ball in center field for a two-base error, a sacrifice bunt combined with a throwing error brought home Upstate's sixth run.
OSU pulled to within a run in the fifth as Shull smoked a two-out, RBI double down the right-field line to make the score 6-5.
The Spartans tallied a pair of key insurance runs in the eighth, getting a two-RBI single off the bat of Preston Lucas to take a three-run advantage.
Down to its final six outs, the Cowboys mounted rallies over the final two innings. In the eighth, they loaded the bases but left them stranded when Ritchie grounded out. The ninth inning saw the Pokes bring the go-ahead run to the plate twice, but after loading the bases with one out, the final two batters struck out to end the game.
