STILLWATER – Oklahoma State extended its winning streak to seven with a 1-0 win over Sam Houston Sunday afternoon at O'Brate Stadium to complete the weekend series sweep.
With the win, the Pokes improved to 8-3, while Sam Houston fell to 4-7.
Mario Pesca made the start for the Cowboys in the series finale and pitched six scoreless innings while striking out eight.
Stormy Rhodes and Noah Wech gave the Cowboys a combined three shutout innings in relief, with Rhodes earning his first win of the season with two innings of work and Wech locking down his second save.
Pesca struck out three in the first inning and pitched around two walks and a single. He again allowed multiple Bearkats to reach base in the second before inducing an inning-ending double play.
The righty started to settle in as the game went on, allowing only two baserunners over his final four innings.
The Cowboy offense was held quiet by SHSU starter Collin Aloisio, managing just two hits through five innings against the freshman.
Alex Conover led off the eighth inning with a walk but was erased trying to steal second. The next hitter, Ezra Essex, legged out an infield single. Essex showcased his elite speed again when Campbell Smithwick dumped a single in front of the SHSU left fielder and, after an error when the left fielder bobbled the ball, was able to race home and score the game's only run on a headfirst slide to avoid the tag of the catcher.
Smithwick finished with two of OSU's four hits in the contest.
OSU continues its homestead Tuesday when it hosts Missouri State, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
