Preston Stout Claims U.S. Amateur Medalist Honors

SAN FRANCISCO – Oklahoma State's Preston Stout fired a 5-under 65 on Tuesday at the U.S. Amateur Championship to claim medalist honors at The Olympic Club Lake Course.
After opening with a 67 at the club's Ocean Course on Monday, Stout finished at 8-under 132 and two shots clear of the field. The rising junior became the third Cowboy to claim medalist honors since 1979, joining Scott Verplank (1984) and Hayden Wood (2017).
Additionally, Stout's 132 tally is tied for the second-best total for the 36-hole qualifying portion of the tournament. Wood holds the event standard with his 131 total.
Stout began his day with six consecutive pars before posting birdies at the seventh and ninth to turn in 2-under 32. After posting his lone bogey of the day at the 12th, he rattled off four birdies over the next five holes to come home in 3-under 33.
Stout will be joined in the 64-player match play bracket by teammate Eric Lee, who posted rounds of 68 and 71 for a 1-under total of 139, tying him for eighth place.
