Mario Pesca
Cowboys Drop Series Opener
April 26, 2025 | Cowboy Baseball
CINCINNATI - In the resumption of the series opener, which began Friday night and lasted 2 ½ scoreless innings before being postponed due to rain, OSU dropped a 4-0 contest to Cincinnati in a pitcher's duel at UC Baseball Stadium.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 18-20 overall and 6-10 in Big 12 play, while UC improved to 23-19 and 9-10 in the league.
Mario Pesca turned in a strong performance on the mound in a losing effort as he fell to 3-2 on the season. The right-hander, who took over after Harrison Bodendorf worked two innings Friday, tied a career high with eight strikeouts and allowed four runs on six hits in five innings.
UC took the lead on a two-out, two-RBI single in the third off the bat of leading hitter Kerrington Cross.
In the top of the fourth, the Cowboys loaded the bases with one out on three walks, but Ian Daugherty flew out to right field and Nolan Schubart was tagged out at home trying to score as the double play ended the inning.
OSU, which managed just three hits in the contest, also threatened in the eighth. But with runners on first and second and one out, Schubart flew out to right field, and pinch runner Braylon Brooks was thrown out at third after attempting to tag up for another inning-ending double play.
The Bearcats doubled their lead with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on another two-RBI single from Cross.
