Cowboys Complete Weekend at U23 Nationals, U20 World Team Trials

GENEVA, Ohio – Three Cowboys placed top-six in freestyle as Oklahoma State's contingent of wrestlers wrapped up action at U23 Nationals and the U20 World Team Trials Sunday afternoon.
Competing at 92 kg, Christian Carroll made the deepest run of any Cowboy registered in the U23 age group as he went on to finish third. Following a pair of wins on Saturday, Carroll opened Sunday with a marquee win over 2024 NCAA third-place finisher Trey Munoz of Oregon State in the quarterfinals. He then fell to Northern Iowa's Wyatt Voelker in the semifinals, but rebounded in consolations and scored 14 unanswered points against Sam Shumate in the third-place bout to cap off his weekend.
Brayden Thompson also posted six wins in the U23 division en route to a sixth-place finish at 86 kg. A loss in the round of 16 moved Thompson to the consolation bracket, where he won four straight matches to secure a podium finish, including a tight 9-8 victory over Nebraska standout Lenny Pinto.
Sam Smith, Jayce Mullin, Cutter Sheets, Benjamin Mower and Trevor Dopps all recorded multiple wins while competing in the U23 division as well.
On Saturday, incoming freshman Cody Merrill reached the challenge tournament finals at 97 kg in the U20 competition, but ultimately fell a win short of the championship series.
