Cowgirls Tied for Second After Second Day of Big 12 Outdoor Championships
May 11, 2024 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
WACO, Texas – Oklahoma State outdoor track & field completed the second day of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Waco, Texas, with the Cowgirls tied for second and the Cowboys fifth overall in the team standings.
Weather delays have been the story of the championships thus far, with Friday's action being delayed by more than five hours. Due to the series of stoppages, any track prelims scheduled for Friday have been converted into straight timed finals on Saturday.
Despite the delays, several Cowboys and Cowgirls put down impressive marks in their respective events, highlighted by runner-up finishes by Bailey Golden and Victor Shitsama in the Heptathlon and Steeplechase.
Throughout both days of the Heptathlon competition, Golden held serve in second place overall and secured her spot with an event victory in the Hep Long Jump on Friday. She was joined on the All-Big 12 podium by teammates Olivija Vaitaityte and Annie Molenhouse, who both earned All-Big 12 honors for the second consecutive year in the Heptathlon with fifth-and seventh-place finishes, respectively.
In the men's Steeplechase, Shitsama went toe-to-toe with Iowa State's Gable Sieperda and BYU's James Corrigan as the trio separated themselves from the rest of the field almost as soon as the race began. Shitsama shadowed Sieperda for much of the race before grabbing the lead with two laps to go, but was out-kicked by Corrigan in the final 100 meters. Both Corrigan and Shitsama broke the Big 12 and Clyde Hart Stadium records in the process, with both men breaking under 8:30.
Three other Cowboys and Cowgirls earned All-Big 12 honors on the day as Philip Frank (fifth place, Decathlon), Blair Anderson (sixth place, Long Jump) and Payton Hinkle (seventh place, Steeplechase) each collected their second straight awards in the same events.
The final day of action kicks off Saturday for OSU with the High Jump and Triple Jump at 3:15 and 3:30 p.m. CT, respectively. Track finals begin with the men's 1,500 Meters at 4:20 p.m. and finish with the women's 4x400 Meter Relay at 8:15 p.m. The entirety of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships are streamed live on ESPN+.
