Multiple Cowboy and Cowgirl Distance Athletes Likely Earn Regional Qualifying Marks on First Day of Bryan Clay Invitational
April 12, 2024 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
AZUSA, Calif. – Oklahoma State outdoor track & field kicked off an eventful weekend with several distance runners making their outdoor season debuts at the Bryan Clay Invitational in California on Thursday night.
2023 outdoor first team All-American Victor Shitsama opened his season in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase in a loaded field that included several professional athletes. Shitsama finished with a time of 8:36.71, which is nearly identical to the time he ran at the NCAA Championships last June. His mark should qualify him for the West Regional meet next month.
On the women's side, Taylor Roe and Molly Born led their 10K heat from wire-to-wire, swapping the lead between each other in an effort to pick up a regional mark. Roe and Born finished nearly side-by-side with times of 33:17.10 and 33:17.15, respectively, and should qualify them for the regional meet.
Rounding out Thursday's festivities, Alex Maier completed his second race of the season in the men's 10,000 Meters, clocking a fifth-place time of 28:17.15 on the night. With his time tonight as well as his 5K mark from the Stanford Invitational, Maier should qualify for the NCAA West Prelims in both events with the possibility of doing the 5K-10K double at NCAAs.
Action continues tomorrow at the Bryan Clay Invitational for the distance crew, with two other groups splitting up for the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Fla., and the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla.
The Bryan Clay Invitational is streamed live on FloTrack, with the Tom Jones Memorial appearing on SEC Network + starting at 3:45 p.m. CT.
