Christian Carroll Wraps Up Run at U20 Worlds
August 16, 2023 | Cowboy Wrestling
AMMAN, Jordan – Incoming Oklahoma State wrestler Christian Carroll's run at the U20 World Championships came to an end Wednesday morning, falling one victory short of advancing to the 125 kg bronze medal match.
On Tuesday, Carroll got off to a strong start with a dominant 14-2 technical fall over Ksawery Kaminski of Poland in the Round of 16. He needed just 2:32 to pick up the victory, not allowing the match to reach the second period.
In the quarterfinal round, Carroll matched up with Iran's Amirreza Masoumi Valadi, the defending heavyweight world champion, and dropped the bout, 10-0. Masoumi Valadi would go on to win again in the semifinals, moving Carroll to the repechage bracket with a chance to claim the bronze medal.
Just a win from clinching a spot in the bronze medal match, Carroll squared off against Hakan Buyukcingil of Turkey in the second repechage round. Buyukcingil, who advanced earlier in the morning by injury default, limited Carroll's scoring opportunities and took the match, 13-0.
The Cowboys are not done competing on the international stage, however, as Dustin Plott and Sammy Alvarez will represent the United States and Puerto Rico, respectively, at the U23 World Championships from October 23-29. The location for the tournament is still undecided.
