Cowboy Track & Field Outdoor Season Concludes with Trio of All-American Honors
June 10, 2023 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
AUSTIN, Texas – Oklahoma State men's outdoor track & field wrapped up its season Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, with all three of OSU's competitors earning All-American honors in their respective events.
Victor Shitsama and Mehdi Yanouri contributed five combined points to the Cowboys team total, adding to Isai Rodriguez' four points from Wednesday's 10,000 Meter Final. The Cowboys finished the competition with nine total points and tied for 27th-place overall. It's the third-straight year OSU scored at the outdoor championship meet, and the 12th time under Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith.
Shitsama became a first-team All-American for the first time in his outdoor career; he previously reached honorable mention honors in 2021. In the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase, he tabbed an 8:36.79 finish in seventh place, scoring two points for the Cowboys in the process. This outdoor season, Shitsama became a Big 12 champion for the first time, as well as setting OSU's third-fastest Steeplechase in program history.
In his first season in the orange and black, Yanouri earned first-team All-America honors with his 1:46.50 finish in the 800 Meters. His sixth-place finish earned the remaining three points for the Cowboys. Once again, the Big 12 runner-up's finish is a school record, the fourth time he's accomplished the feat this season and furthers his mark on OSU's 800 Meter leaderboard.
Earlier in the day, Fouad Messaoudi's historic 2022-23 season ended with second-team All-America honors in the 1,500 Meters. In the loaded field, Messaoudi crossed the line in 3:44.41, less than two seconds off the winning time. This outdoor season, Messaoudi became a Big 12 champion for the second time in his career outdoors, while also setting the program record in the 1,500 Meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
On the women's side, Bailey Golden wrapped up the first day of competition in the Heptathlon with 3,377 points from four events. On Saturday, she will wrap up the final three events: the Long Jump, Javelin Throw and 800 Meters.
The Cowgirls wrap up action on Saturday with Billah Jepkirui and Gabija Galvydyte joining Golden in the final day of competition.
Jepkirui makes her first appearance in an NCAA outdoor final after advancing through the 1,500 semifinal round on Thursday with an automatic qualifying time of 4:17.76. The freshman superstar looks to become OSU's third 1,500 individual title in Cowgirl history.
Galvydyte follows Jepkirui in the 800 Meters after an impressive outing in the semifinal round with a 2:03.01 finish. The Big 12 champion could become OSU's first 800 Meter individual champion, regardless of gender.
The entirety of the NCAA Championships will be broadcast live on ESPN2, with live results for the meet found here.
