May 23, 2023 | Cowboy Baseball
IRVING, Texas – Highlighted by Nolan Schubart and Tyler Wulfert, Oklahoma State had 10 players celebrated with All-Big 12 status for the 2023 season.
Schubart was named the Big 12 Co-Freshman of the Year and also collected All-Big 12 First Team plaudits and a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, while Wulfert was selected as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and a member of the All-Big 12 Second Team.
An outfielder, Schubart becomes just the second Big 12 Freshman of the Year in OSU history, joining Matt Smith, who earned that acclaim in 1998. (From 2000-05, the Big 12 had a freshman player and freshman pitcher of the year award; OSU's Joe Weaver was the 2001 Big 12 Freshman Pitcher of the Year, and Corey Brown was the 2005 Big 12 Freshman Player of the Year for the Cowboys).
Wulfert is the fifth Cowboy to earn Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors, joining Tyler Mach (2006), Zach Johnson (2011), Matt Kroon (2018) and Christian Encarnacion-Strand (2021).
OSU earned 12 all-conference accolades in '23, bringing the program's total selections to 221, the most of any program in league history.
Joining Schubart on the All-Big 12 First Team are infielder Roc Riggio and Carson Benge, who earned first-team honors as a utility player.
Benge and Schubart joined a select group as two of only 27 freshmen in Big 12 history to have been named All-Big 12 First Team. They joined Corey Brown (2005), Jordy Mercer (2006) and Justin Campbell (2021) as Cowboys to earn that distinction.
OSU placed six on the All-Big 12 Second Team, tying a program record for second teamers previously set in 2008. Along with Wulfert, Cowboys on this year's team are catcher Chase Adkison, designated hitter Colin Brueggemann, utility player Nolan McLean, relief pitcher Isaac Stebens and Benge, who made the second team as an outfielder.
The nine combined first- and second-team selections for OSU tied a program record; in 2008, the Cowboys also had nine first- and second-team honorees.
Three Cowboys were All-Big 12 Honorable Mention picks, with starting pitchers Ben Abram and Juaron Watts Brown earning that distinction, and McLean being named to the team as a relief pitcher.
Schubart's first collegiate season has seen him play in all 53 OSU games, and he is hitting .348 with 20 doubles, 15 home runs and 66 RBIs. He ranks second in the Big 12 in RBIs, third in doubles and fifth in homers.
The Michigan native also ranks fourth in the league with a .695 slugging percentage, seventh with 130 total bases and 10th with a .463 on-base percentage.
Wulfert is OSU's leading hitter with a .355 batting average, which also ranks sixth in the conference. Along with nine home runs, he has 15 doubles, three triples and 30 RBIs in 41 games. He ranks fourth in the Big 12 with a .695 slugging percentage.
A third baseman, Wulfert hit .386 with seven homers, eight doubles and 21 RBIs in league play.
One of the Big 12's top offensive players, Riggio is hitting .354, which is seventh in the league, and ranks in the top five in the conference in homers (17), triples (3), runs (63), RBIs (56), total bases (142), on-base percentage (.484) and slugging percentage (.728).
Riggio leads the Cowboys with 22 multi-hit games and 17 multi-RBI performances, and he enters postseason play having reached base safely in 30 consecutive games.
A redshirt freshman, Benge has been a standout at the plate and on the mound in his first season. An outfielder and DH, he owns a .349 batting average to go along with 17 doubles, seven homers and 38 RBIs.
In nine starts on the mound, Benge is 2-1 with a 5.23 ERA and has 34 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings.
Adkison has thrived as OSU's starting catcher this season. The junior is hitting .339 with nine doubles, seven homers and 42 RBIs. He owns a .996 fielding percentage and has thrown out 13 runners attempting to steal bases.
Another of the nation's top two-way players, McLean earned all-conference honors for the second-straight year after being a first-team utility player, second-team pitcher and honorable mention infielder a year ago.
Despite missing a month and 16 games due to injury, McLean is hitting .275 with nine homers and 29 RBIs. The junior was among the nation's leaders in saves before being injured and has made 11 pitching appearances on the year; he owns a 1-1 record with six saves and a 1.86 ERA and has 27 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.
In his first season with the Cowboys, Brueggemann has proven to be a valuable hitter. The sophomore sports a .363 batting average and has 10 doubles, six homers and 36 RBIs.
Another first-year Cowboy, Stebens has been OSU's top arm out of the bullpen. He leads the Big 12 with a 2.44 ERA, and in 25 relief appearances, the right-hander is 4-1 with six saves while racking up 74 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings.
Stebens also leads the league in opponent batting average at .198, and he ranks fourth in saves and appearances and seventh in strikeouts.
In Abram and Watts-Brown, the Cowboys have a pair of transfers who have proven to be key members of the starting rotation.
Abram is tied for the team lead and is second in the league in wins, sporting a 7-2 record and 6.00 ERA in 15 appearances, 12 of those starts. The righty ranks ninth in the Big 12 with 70 strikeouts, and four of his wins came in conference play.
Watts-Brown leads the Big 12 and is 11th nationally with 108 strikeouts, and his 13.32 strikeouts per nine innings also ranks seventh in the NCAA.
A sophomore right-hander, Watts-Brown has made 14 starts for the Cowboys and is 5-4 with a 4.68 ERA. He is the 16th pitcher in OSU history to record 100 strikeouts in a season.
