NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma State opened the Bedlam Series with a 13-2 rout of Oklahoma Thursday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
With the win, the 10th-ranked Cowboys improved to 36-15 overall and 14-8 in Big 12 play, while OU is now 29-23 and 10-12 in the conference. OSU is now within one game of West Virginia for first place in the league standings.
Colin Brueggemann homered twice, and Tyler Wulfert also went deep as six Cowboys collected RBIs in the contest. Brueggemann finished with a career-high five RBIs, while Wulfert and Roc Riggio each drove in two runs.
Evan O'Toole picked up the win in relief of starter Nolan McLean to improve to 6-1 on the season as he tossed five shutout innings and struck out four.
McLean was solid in his first-career start, which came in his 36th collegiate appearance. The righty worked three innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out five.
OSU took the game's initial lead in the first, loading the bases and plating a run on an RBI fielder's choice by Nolan Schubart to go up, 1-0.
The Pokes added to their lead in the second as Riggio came up with a clutch two-out hit, lining a pitch to left field for a two-RBI single to give OSU a 3-0 advantage.
OSU took advantage of free bases and a big blast in the third. After a hit-by-pitch and two walks loaded the bases, Brueggemann stepped to the plate and smashed a grand slam over the wall in right field. The blast was Brueggemann's fifth of the season and gave the Cowboys a 7-0 lead.
The Sooners finally got on the board with a run in the third when they drew a bases-loaded walk, but McLean escaped further damage as he recorded a strikeout and foul out to leave the bases full.
OSU responded in the fourth with another four-run inning. Following a walk and a double, Chase Adkison brought home the first run with a single, and a wild pitch brought home the Cowboys' ninth run of the contest. A two-run homer by Wulfert, his ninth round-tripper of the season, then pushed the lead to 11-1.
Brueggemann added his second homer of the night in the sixth, a solo shot to left field.
The two teams will return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m.
