April 27, 2023 | Cowboy Wrestling
Update: Daton Fix will no longer compete at the U.S. Open due to illness.
STILLWATER -Â Several current and future Cowboy wrestlers will compete this weekend at the U.S. Open Championships in Las Vegas, taking the first step in their bid to become a world team member.
OSU is sending nine current wrestlers to the tournament with four competing in the senior men's freestyle division, five competing in U20 men's freestyle. The three highest-ranked recruits in this year's signing class will also be competing in the U20 men's freestyle tournament.
Daton Fix (61 kg) headlines the group of Cowboys heading to Las Vegas in the senior division. The 2021 senior world silver medalist will look to advance to Final X with his sights set on making a third United States senior world team. Redshirt freshman Teague Travis and redshirt junior Daniel Manibog will take on the 70 kg bracket, while Kyle Haas will wrestle at 92 kg.
Freshmen Cutter Sheets (70 kg), Jordan Williams (70 kg), Dax Hughes (86 kg), Benji Mower (86 kg) and Hayden Simpson (125 kg) will wrestle in the U20 men's freestyle division with a chance to claim their spot in the best-of-three wrestle-off series against the World Team Trials challenge tournament champion. Simpson will also compete in the U20 Greco-Roman tournament at 125 kg.
Joining them in U20 freestyle brackets will be incoming freshmen Cael Hughes (61 kg), Brayden Thompson (86 kg) and Christian Carroll (125 kg).
Former All-Americans for Oklahoma State Alex Dieringer and Derek White will also be competing in the senior men's freestyle tournament. Three-time NCAA Champion, Alex Dieringer, is the third seed at 79 kg where he will have to win the U.S. Open to qualify for Final X, while Derek White is the sixth seed at 125 kg.
The top seven finishers at weight classes where there is no returning world medalist will qualify for the World Team Trials challenge tournament, although some have already secured spots in the tournament. The champion of each bracket at the U.S. Open will earn their bid to Final X.
The U.S. Open Championships began on Wednesday and will conclude on Sunday evening. A live stream and brackets will be available for fans at FloWrestling.org.
