OSU Wrestling Second with One Session Left at Big 12 Championships

TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team finished the third of four sessions at the 2023 Big 12 Wrestling Championships Sunday afternoon with a trio of Cowboys finishing in third place, two finishing fifth and another in sixth. Three more will finish either first or second after Sunday night's final round.
Reece Witcraft (125 pounds), Travis Wittlake (184) and Luke Surber (197) each went 2-0 on the day to finish in third place, while Carter Young (141) and Konner Doucet (285) went 1-1 to finish fifth and Victor Voinovich (149) dropped two close matches to finish sixth.
It marks highest career conference tournament finishes for Witcraft and Young, as well as Doucet and Voinovich who were competing in it for the first time.
The team performance was enough to put the Cowboys in second place in the team standings with 125 points, 19 behind Missouri's 144 points and four in front of third-place Iowa State's 121.
The most notable wins of the consolation semifinals included a fall from Witcraft over second-seeded Jore Volk of Wyoming and a 12-3 major decision from Surber over Evan Bockman of Utah Valley.
In addition to the top eight places on the bracket, OSU's Wyatt Sheets wrestled two extra matches with two bonus-point wins to finish in ninth place and secure the Big 12's first alternate spot at 165 pounds for an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. OSU's other nine wrestlers locked up their spot at nationals, and Sheets could make it all 10 with an at-large berth.
Overall, the Cowboys finished Sunday's first session with a 10-4 overall record in individual bouts.
OSU's competition at the Big 12 Championships concludes tonight with three wrestlers competing in the finals. With a possible 18 possible points remaining, the Cowboys can still finish as high as second place as a team.
The Cowboy finalists include Daton Fix at 133 pounds, Kaden Gfeller at 157 pounds and Dustin Plott at 174 pound. Fix will aim for his fourth conference title, while Gfeller tries for his third and Plott aims for his second.
