WICHITA, Kan. – Oklahoma State won the first of three scheduled midweek contests against Wichita State this season with a 10-1 victory over the Shockers Wednesday night at Eck Stadium.
With the win, the 15th-ranked Cowboys improved to 17-5, while WSU fell to 10-10.
OSU smashed four home runs on the night, two of those by Roc Riggio, who went 3-for-5 with five RBIs in the game. Nolan McLean also went deep and collected two hits while driving in three runs.
Carson Benge shined on the mound and at the plate. He picked up his first-career win by allowing just one run and three hits while striking out five, and he also tallied three hits, including a double.
OSU jumped on the Shockers early. After a Riggio double and a walk to David Mendham, McLean delivered an RBI double into the right-center field gap, and Nolan Schubart followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Cowboys a 2-0 advantage in the first inning.
The Pokes doubled their lead in the third. Following a Jaxson Crull infield single, Riggio smacked a line drive over the right-field wall for his sixth homer of the season and a 4-0 OSU lead.
WSU got on the scoreboard with a leadoff home run in the fourth, but the Cowboys quickly answered when McLean crushed a two-run bomb to left in the fifth to make the score 6-1. The blast was McLean's sixth homer of the season.
The Cowboys continued their home run derby in the sixth. Riggio got things started with his second of the game, a three-run shot, and Mendham followed with an opposite-field shot that gave OSU a 10-1 advantage.
Evan O'Toole, Brennan Phillips and Dominick Reid kept the Shockers off the scoreboard over the final four innings to secure the win.
OSU returns to Big 12 action Friday with its conference home opener against Baylor. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
