STILLWATER – Oklahoma State Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith and distance runner Fouad Messaoudi were named USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Coach and Athlete of the Year, respectively, the organization announced Thursday.
Smith was named both men's and women's Midwest Region Coach of the Year following dominant performances by the Cowboys and Cowgirls during the indoor season. The Cowboys placed sixth overall in the team race at the NCAA Indoor Championships and second at the Big 12 Championships this season. The Cowboys also crowned two NCAA and five Big 12 champions under his tutelage.
On the women's side under Smith, the Cowgirls won their first Big 12 Track & Field Championship in program history with four Cowgirls winning individual conference crowns. At the NCAA Championships, OSU placed 21st overall with Taylor Roe and the Cowgirl DMR earning first-team All-America honors.
The regional awards are Smith's sixth and seventh individual awards this season after winning Big 12 and Midwest Region Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year and Big 12 Women's Indoor Coach of the Year.
Messaoudi was named Midwest Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year after collecting OSU's first individual NCAA indoor titles in 37 years in the 3,000 Meters and as the opening leg of the DMR. He also won a pair of Big 12 titles in the Mile and DMR and finished third overall in the 3K. During the regular season, Messaoudi was the opening leg of the Cowboy DMR that broke the collegiate record at the Arkansas Qualifier on February 17.
