Cowboy Baseball Comes Back To Win At Missouri State
February 28, 2023 | Cowboy Baseball
Nolan Schubart slugged two home runs and tallied six RBIs for the 12th-ranked Cowboys, who improved to 5-3 on the season.
Eight Pokes recorded hits in the contest, with the bottom of the order – Aidan Meola, Marcus Brown and Chase Adkison – each collecting two hits.
Bayden Root picked up his first win of the season with two innings of relief, and Nolan McLean recorded his NCAA-leading fourth save.
The Bears (5-3) took control of the scoreboard in the second inning via the long ball.
Zack Stewart and Dylan Robertson provided MSU's first two runs with solo home runs, and Spencer Nivens delivered the big blow with a three-run blast to make the score 5-0.
OSU got on the scoreboard in the fourth on an RBI single from Schubart, then rallied for three runs in the fifth to cut its deficit to one.
In the fifth, Carson Benge, who doubled earlier in the frame, scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-2, and following a two-out walk to David Mendham, Schubart crushed a two-run homer to center field.
The Pokes tied the score in the sixth. Brown led off the inning with a single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Following a sac bunt, Brown scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-5.
After tying the score, OSU loaded the bases with one out but could not push the go-ahead run across.
MSU regained the lead in the sixth, rallying for three runs on a pair of hits and taking advantage of an error to go up, 8-5.
But the Cowboys were not down long, however, as they answered with the huge seventh inning in which they collected five hits and took advantage of a pair of errors.
Following a Meola double, Brown smacked another RBI single and a second run scored on an error, and Adkison followed with an RBI double into the right-center field gap to tie the score.
Another error would push the go-ahead run across, and Schubart provided the big blow with a three-run bomb to center field.
OSU took the 12-9 lead to the ninth, but the Bears got back-to-back hits with one out and plated a run on a wild pitch to bring the tying run to the plate before McLean retired the next two batters to secure the win.
The Cowboys return to action Friday against Austin Peay when they open a 10-game homestand at O'Brate Stadium.
