Janzen Keisel
Cowboy Baseball No-Hits California Baptist To Win Home Opener
February 21, 2023 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER – Five Oklahoma State pitchers combined for a no-hitter, and David Mendham's clutch home run gave 15th-ranked Oklahoma State a 2-0 win over California Baptist Tuesday in the Cowboys' home opener at O'Brate Stadium.
In his OSU debut, Janzen Keisel worked the first 5 1/3 innings, striking out 11 along the way, before Isaac Stebens tossed two innings in relief. Drew Blake and Evan O'Toole both recorded outs in the eighth, and Nolan McLean earned the save with a perfect ninth.
The no-hitter was the 12th in program history and the first for the Cowboys since Justin Campbell achieved the feat against Kansas on May 8, 2021. It was the third combined no-hitter by OSU and the first since Jason Bell, Brent Nichols, Rob Gaiko and Marcus Cuper no-hit Missouri Southern on March 16, 1993.
Furthermore, the no-hitter was the fifth in OSU history in a game that went nine innings, joining the 1993 combined no-no, Campell's and no-hitters by Bob Richardson in 1968 and Jim Wixson in the 1960 College World Series.
The game was a pitcher's duel throughout.
Keisel threw 80 pitches and was perfect save for a two-out walk in the second inning, and Stebens relieved him with one out in the sixth and struck out four of the seven batters he faced.
CBU (2-2) did not get another base runner until the eighth when Connor McGuire reached on a throwing error by Cowboy second baseman Roc Riggio. After a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position, Blake came out of the bullpen to record a fly out before O'Toole induced a groundout to end the threat.
Mendham provided his heroics in the bottom of the inning. Riggio walked to open the frame, and after a strikeout, Mendham stepped to the plate and delivered an opposite-field homer to left. The two-run shot was his first of the season.
OSU (2-2) returns to action Friday when the Cowboys open a three-game series with LMU at O'Brate Stadium.
