Cowgirls Down School Record to Wrap up Historic Regular Season
February 17, 2023 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Oklahoma State indoor track & field rewrote the record books at the Arkansas Qualifier in Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday, setting an unofficial world record in the men's Distance Medley Relay to wrap up the regular season.
The Cowboy DMR went toe-to-toe with Washington, with both teams breaking the previous world record set by an Oregon relay team that consisted of two Olympians and an NCAA champion. However, it was the Cowboys who came out on top after a blistering 3:52.84 mile split from Ryan Schoppe at the finish.
The squad of Fouad Messaoudi (2:49.49), DeJuana McArthur (46.82), Hafez Mahadi (1:47.27) and Schoppe (3:52.84) blew past Oregon's previous record DMR time of 9:19.40 set at the Razorback Invitational.
The Cowboys have now broken the program record in the DMR in back-to-back Arkansas Qualifiers, with OSU shaving nearly 11 seconds off the old school record set in 2016. Mahadi's time in the 800-Meter split would count as the fastest time in program history – a record he broke in last week's Tyson Invitational and McArthur's 400 Meter split would be the second-fastest. Schoppe' split of 3:52.84 would also be a program record by nearly two seconds in the Mile.
Not to be outdone, the Cowgirl DMR squad of Gabija Galvydyte (3:19.55), Tamara Woodley (53.56), Maddie Salek (2:06.10) and Taylor Roe (4:31.45) combined for a time of 10:50.65, becoming the fifth-fastest DMR program in NCAA history.
The women's DMR was tightly contested throughout, with the top four programs finishing within two seconds of each other. Roe now has a place in five of the six fastest DMR races for the Cowgirls. Woodley's performance in the 400 Meters would be good enough for the third-fastest in program history, while Salek's 800 Meter split would put her seventh overall at OSU.
The Cowgirls also shattered the school record in the event by over five seconds, surpassing the 2019 NCAA Championships squad that included NCAA and U.S. 1,500 Meter Champion Sinclaire Johnson.
OSU now looks to ride the momentum of Friday's historical outing into next weekend's Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas, on Feb 24-25. Last year's OSU teams saw both Cowboys and Cowgirls taking home conference titles individually and in the DMR's in addition to several school records being set in the process. The Championships will be aired on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
