December 15, 2023 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER – Scott Baker has been selected for the Oklahoma State Cowboy Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2024, and the former pitcher will be inducted at the OSU Baseball First Pitch Banquet on January 28.
Baker, who becomes the 62nd member of the Cowboy Baseball Hall of Fame, starred for the Cowboys from 2001-03 before going on to a 10-year Major League Baseball career.
"Scott was a winner," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "He had an out pitch with one of the best knuckle curveballs I have ever seen. He did a great job leading the staff while here at Oklahoma State and continued to be a winner and enjoyed a long and successful Major League career.
"We are excited to honor Scott and welcome him and his family back to campus!"
A right-hander from Shreveport, La., Baker made 41 appearances during his three seasons in Stillwater and posted a 22-10 record to go along with a 3.90 ERA. He tossed five complete games and racked up 184 strikeouts in 241 2/3 innings.
Baker ranks ninth all time in program history with 40 starts, and his 22 wins are 10th on OSU's career list.
"When I got the unexpected call from Josh congratulating me on being inducted into the Cowboy Baseball Hall of Fame, I was honored and thankful to those who felt I was deserving of this recognition," Baker said. "I've always cherished my time at OSU and being part of a baseball program rich in tradition and history.
"I will always be grateful to my teammates, the coaching staff and the fans for the memories with OSU Baseball."
Tabbed a Freshman All-American in 2001, Baker was 6-2 in 11 starts in his first collegiate season and struck out 40 in 53 1/3 innings.
Baker earned All-Big 12 honors in both 2002 and 2003 as he won six games and tossed three complete games as a sophomore before capping his OSU career with a standout junior season.
That '03 campaign saw Baker post a 10-5 record and a 3.79 ERA, and he racked up 97 strikeouts in 111 2/3 innings. He started 16 times and posted a pair of complete games.
Baker was selected by Minnesota in the second round of the 2003 MLB Draft with the 58th overall pick, and he made his big league debut with the Twins in 2005.
In seven seasons with the Twins, Baker made 159 starts and won 63 games, and he reached double figures in wins three consecutive years from 2008-10. In 2008, he ranked eighth in the American League with a 3.45 ERA, and he won 15 games the following season to rank 10th in the AL.
Baker completed his pro career with one-year stints with the Dodgers, Rangers and Cubs and finished with 66 career wins in 193 games.
Fans wanting to help celebrate Baker's hall of fame career, as well as share the excitement of the current Cowboy ballclub for the upcoming 2024 season, can purchase tickets for the annual First Pitch Banquet, which will be held Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Wes Watkins Center on the OSU campus.
