Cowboys Post 2-0 Mark On Day One At Big 12 Match Play

HOCKLEY, Texas – Oklahoma State's men's golf team registered a pair of victories on the opening day of action at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament on Monday, knocking off Kansas, 2-1-2, and West Virginia, 3-1-1, at Houston Oaks.
In the Cowboys' morning match against KU, Jonas Baumgartner led OSU off with an impressive 7-and-6 victory over Cecil Belisle. The senior won five of the first seven holes, including four in a row to take a commanding lead. He would close out the match with a win on his 12th hole.
Freshman Johnnie Clark rallied from a 3-down deficit through three holes against Will King to pull even seven holes into the match. He would win holes nine and 11 to move in front and would close out his win by taking the final hole.
Freshman Gaven Lane tied his match against Gunnar Broin, while classmate Preston Stout erased a five-hole deficit by winning five of his final six holes to tie his match with William Duquette.
Sophomore John Wild lost, 3 and 2, to Davis Cooper, giving KU its full point.
The afternoon session saw Baumgartner once again register a big win as he took down Todd Duncan, 5 and 4. Baumgartner won two of the final three holes on the back nine to grab a 3-up lead with seven to play. He would then win holes 1 and 2 to put the match away.
Stout won five holes on the back nine to take a commanding 4-up lead and won the fourth hole to close out a 5-and-4 win over Carson Kammann.
Wild added OSU's third point in a back-and-forth contest against Kaleb Wilson. Wild claimed the 15th and 16th holes to secure a 3-and-2 victory.
Clark tied his match with Jackson Davenport, while Max Green registered the full point for the Mountaineers with a 2-up win over Lane.
In addition to the OSU starting five in Houston, five Cowboys are competing individually at the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kan.
Fifth year Rayhan Thomas fired rounds of 68 and 67 to stand at 9-under 135 and tied for first place.
Fifth year Hazen Newman found his way into the top 10 as well, tying for ninth place at 137 with scores of 70 and 67.
Senior Bo JIn posted rounds of 73 and 69 to stand at 142 and tied for 21st place.
Junior Jordan Wilson also finished the day at 142 with scores of 69 and 73.
Fifth year Dillon Stewart posted a 146 total with a 72 and 74 to tie for 47th place.
