Roe Breaks School Record and Sets NCAA Lead in Outdoor 5K Debut
April 15, 2022 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State outdoor track & field opened a tri-meet weekend with a couple of huge performances on Thursday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California.
Taylor Roe headlined the night for the Cowgirls in the loaded women's 5,000 Meter Invite, shattering the previous school record by almost 20 seconds with her winning time of 15:21.47. In her first career outdoor 5K, Roe set the NCAA-leading time by nearly six seconds and unofficially became the 20th-fastest collegian of All-Time in the event. In the process, she also set a new facility and meet record all while defeating a loaded field by nearly seven seconds overall.
Immediately following Roe were Alex Maier and Shea Foster in the men's 5,000 Meter Invite. The two returned to competition for the first time since their impressive performances in the 10,000 Meters two weeks ago at the Stanford Invitational, where they ran the seventh and 16th-fastest 10K times this year.
Maier held serve with the front pack for nearly the entire race, finishing seventh overall with a time of 13:26.81, which is the third-fastest time in program history and the ninth fastest in the NCAA this year. Meanwhile, Foster also ran a new personal best with his time of 13:48.76, which was good enough for a 16th-place finish in another loaded invitational field.
Earlier in the day, Maddie Salek opened her 2022 outdoor campaign in the women's 800 Meters, nearly surpassing her previous best with a time of 2:06.56.
Several other OSU runners will compete on Friday in California as the rest of the Cowboys and Cowgirls begin their weekends at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., as well as the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla.
