DETROIT – Oklahoma State wrestler Daton Fix's season came to an end with an NCAA runner-up finish for the third time in his career Saturday night as the second-seeded Cowboy dropped a 3-2 decision to top-seeded Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State.
In a hard-fought battle that came down to the final seconds, Bravo-Young was able to fend off a final charge from Fix to win the decision and the 133-pound title.
Fix, who finished with a season record of 25-1 and moved to 72-4 in his career, is now the 30th wrestler in Oklahoma State history with three top-two finishes at the NCAA Championships, and he's the first to accomplish the feat since Alex Dieringer did so from 2014-16.
He reached the finals by starting 4-0 in the championship bracket with two bonus-point wins and victories over the Nos, 3, 10, 15 and 31 seeds in the weight class. The performance not only got him to 25 wins on the year, but also took his season totals to 17 bonus-point wins and 13 wins over ranked opponents.
Oklahoma State wrestling has now won 483 All-America honors in its history, which is far more than any other program, and OSU coach John Smith has now coached his wrestlers to 150 All-America honors in his career.
As a team, the Cowboys finished in 14th place with 38.5 points.
The event concluded the 2021-22 Cowboy wrestling season, which included a 13-4 dual record, three Big 12 individual titles, eight NCAA qualifiers and two All-America performers.
