Gupta’s U.S. Amateur Run Comes To An End

BANDON, Ore. — Oklahoma State's Aman Gupta saw his furious comeback attempt to become the sixth Cowboy to win the U.S. Amateur come to an end on Saturday evening at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
Gupta fell to Georgia Tech's Tyler Strafaci, 1 up, in their semifinal match.
Strafaci opened with a win at the first and moved to 3 up after claiming Nos. 4 and 5. Gupta won the eighth before Strafaci took the next two to hold a 4-up lead with eight to play.
Gupta cut the margin in half with wins at the 13th and 15th. He then clawed within one after taking the 16th with a birdie and made par at the 17th to pull even.
However, Gupta found trouble in a fairway bunker at the 18th and Strafaci advanced after claiming the last.
Gupta, a native of Concord, N.C., earned the No. 5 seed in match play after posting rounds of 64 and 73 during the stroke play portion of the event. He opened match play with a 3-and-2 triumph over Van Holmgren.
Gupta posted a 1-up victory over Jonathan Yaun in the round of 32 to advance to the round of 16 where he defeated Sam Bennett, 5 and 3.
He reached the semifinals with a 1-up win over Michael Thorbjornsen on Friday.
