FRISCO, Texas – Oklahoma State suffered its second loss in the Frisco College Baseball Classic Saturday as the 23rd-ranked Cowboys fell 4-2 to Illinois at Dr. Pepper Ballpark.
With the loss, OSU is now 7-4 on the season, while the Fighting Illini improved to 5-3.
Hueston Morrill was 2-for-4 with a home run for the Pokes, while Max Hewitt also had two hits.
Justin Campbell took the loss on the mound in his third-career start to fall to 0-2. The freshman right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out three in 4 1/3 innings of work.
The Cowboys took an early lead compliments of Morrill, who led off the bottom of the first with his first home run of the season over the wall in left field.
OSU's lead did not last long, however. Alex Steinbach led off the second with a double, and two batters later, an RBI single by Jacob Campbell tied the score at 1-1.
Illinois took its first lead of the day in the third when Branden Comia delivered a solo homer to center field to put the Illini up 2-1.
The Cowboys threatened in the fifth, putting runners on the corners with one out. After Morrill was thrown out trying to steal second, Kaden Polcovich was hit by a pitch to again put two Pokes on. But a line drive down the line by Jake Thompson was speared by a diving Illinois first baseman to end the inning.
The Illini pushed across their third run of the day in the sixth. Following a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt, Jacob Campbell's second RBI single of the contest made the score 3-1.
OSU's deficit reached 4-1 in the seventh after a two-out RBI double off the bat of Kellen Sarver.
The Cowboys mounted a final rally in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate twice. After a one-out double by Brock Mathis, Cade Cabbiness singled to put runners on the corners before a balk made the score 4-2.
But pinch hitter Caeden Trenkle struck out, and Morrill flied out to center field to end the game.
OSU concludes tourney play Sunday against Texas A&M at 3 p.m.
