LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma State's season came to an end in the rubber game of the NCAA Lubbock Super Regional Sunday as host Texas Tech used a late rally to hand the Cowboys an 8-6 loss at Rip Griffin Park.
The Cowboys brought the go-ahead run to the plate three times in the ninth inning but could not score as they ended the season 40-21 and one win shy of making the program's 21st College World Series appearance.
OSU was making its fifth Super Regional appearance in program history and third in the last six years, and the 40-win season marked its fourth in seven seasons under head coach Josh Holliday.
The Cowboys smashed three home runs in the contest as Trevor Boone, Colin Simpson and Cade Cabbiness all went deep, and OSU finished the season with 93 long balls, which currently ranks as the third most in the NCAA this season.
OSU jumped out to the game's first lead in the second when Boone led off the inning with a no-doubt home run to left field. The blast was his team-leading 21st of the season, giving the Cowboys a 1-0 lead.
The Cowboys held the lead until the third. After retiring the first seven batters he faced, OSU starter Brett Standlee gave up consecutive doubles to Tanner O'Tremba, Braxton Fulford and Dylan Neuse as the Red Raiders took a 2-1 advantage.
TTU added to its lead in the fourth when Josh Jung led off the inning with his 13th homer of the season, with the shot to center field making the score 3-1.
OSU answered in its next at bat. After a one-out double off the bat of Hueston Morrill, Christian Funk followed with a double of his own to cut the Cowboys' deficit to 3-2. Following a wild pitch that moved Funk to third, Simpson delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the score.
The 3-3 score did not last long, however, as Fulford led off the bottom of the fifth with a homer to right-center field to put the Red Raiders up 4-3.
The Cowboys would trail until the seventh, when Cabbiness' solo homer to right field tied the score at 4-4.
The eighth would prove to be the pivotal inning. Simpson led off the inning with his 17th home run of the season to give OSU its second lead of the day, and the Cowboys added a run later in the inning when Andrew Navigato scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryce Carter to put the Pokes up 6-4.
The bottom of the inning doomed the Cowboys, however. Jung led off the frame with his second homer of the game to pull TTU to within a run. Ben Leeper then came out of the bullpen and issued a pair of walks to set the table for Kurt Wilson, who smacked a three-run home run to right-centerfield to put the home team back on top.
Trailing 8-6 entering the ninth, Alix Garcia and Cabbiness drew back-to-back walks to open the inning and bring the go-ahead run to the plate. But Morrill struck out, Funk fouled out and Simpson went down swinging to end the game.
