OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-seeded Oklahoma State defeated No. 2-seed UConn, 3-1, in the NCAA Oklahoma City Regional final Monday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark to advance to the fifth Super Regional in program history.
With the win, the ninth-ranked Cowboys improved to 39-19 and earned their third Super Regional berth in the last six seasons and first since 2016. OSU has previously advanced to Super Regional play in 1999, 2007, 2014 and 2016.
OSU will travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face familiar Big 12 Conference foe Texas Tech in the best-of-three Super Regional with a College World Series berth on the line. The Cowboys will be seeking the 21st CWS appearance in program history.
Along with three stellar plays in left field, Carson McCusker led the Pokes offensively with a 2-for-3 effort, highlighted by his two-RBI double that gave OSU the lead in the sixth. Hueston Morrill tallied two hits from the leadoff spot, while Alix Garcia also had two hits, including a solo home run in the fifth that tied the game.
Joe Lienhard earned the win for the Cowboys in his eighth start of the season to improve to 4-1. The senior right-hander was dominant in six innings of work, allowing one run on five hits while walking one and striking out four.
Peyton Battenfield pitched the final three innings and earned his fifth save of the season and fourth of the postseason. The junior righty struck out five of the 10 batters he faced to slam the door on the Huskies and secure the win.
The Cowboys threatened to score in the third but left the bases loaded. McCusker and Garcia opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Cade Cabbiness moved them both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, prompting UConn to make a move to the bullpen.
Southpaw Caleb Wurster entered for the Huskies to face Morrill and struck him out on three pitches for the second out of the inning. Christian Funk then worked a full count and drew a walk to bring up Colin Simpson with the bases loaded, but Wurster picked up his second strikeout of the inning to keep the game scoreless.
Back-to-back singles by the Huskies to start the fifth set the table for Anthony Prato, who drove in what proved to be UConn's only run with a single to give UConn a 1-0 lead. But Lienhard was able to limit the damage and strand two Huskies in scoring position.
The Huskies' lead did not last long, however, as Garcia smacked his seventh home run of the season to open the bottom half of the frame, a blast over the left field wall into the Cowboys' bullpen to tie the game at 1-1.
After Trevor Boone drew a one-out walk in the sixth, Bryce Carter singled through the right side of the infield and advanced to second base on an error. Next up was McCusker, who delivered a clutch two-run double to deep left to give OSU its first lead of the game at 3-1.
Battenfield came on in relief of Lienhard to start the seventh and, after striking out the first batter he faced, issued a walk before hitting the next batter with a pitch. But he worked out of jam by inducing a ground ball for a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
Over the final two innings, Battenfield was perfect and picked up four strikeouts along the way to clinch the win.
Three Cowboys were named to the NCAA Oklahoma City Regional All-Tournament Team, led by Boone, who was named the NCAA Oklahoma City Regional's Most Outstanding Player. Morrill and pitcher Jensen Elliott joined the junior center fielder on the all-tournament team.
Morrill tallied five hits over four tourney games, Elliott earned a win in seven dominant innings against Harvard and Boone delivered the biggest blast of the tournament for OSU with his go-ahead, three-run homer in the ninth inning of the Cowboys' 6-5 win over Nebraska on Saturday.
