Ryan Smeeton Honored as Big 12 Athlete of the Week

IRVING, Texas—Oklahoma State's Ryan Smeeton was named a Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
Smeeton went to the Payton Jordan Invitational last week and won the invitational section of the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:27.90. Smeeton's time set the NCAA lead in the event and his time is 14th-best in the world. He also achieved the world standard, qualifying him for the IAAF World Championships this fall.
Smeeton catapulted himself to second-best in OSU history, barely missing Chuck Sloan's mark of 8:26.66, which was set in 2000 at the USA Olympic Trials. The sophomore from Calgary, Canada, is also leading the Big 12 by nearly 20 seconds.
It's the second week in a row an OSU athlete has been honored as a conference athlete of the week. Sinclaire Johnson won the award last week for her performances at the Drake Relays.
Smeeton and the rest of the Oklahoma State men's and women's track and field teams are competing at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships beginning Friday in Norman, Oklahoma. You can purchase tickets to the event here.
