CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oklahoma State did something that has not been done in nearly a decade Sunday at Goss Stadium as the 21st-ranked Cowboys swept No. 2 Oregon State with an 8-7 win in the series finale.
The series sweep marks the first time since 2010 that Oregon State was swept in a three-game series on its home field, with Stanford the last to achieve that feat.
Cade Cabbiness' two-RBI single in the eighth inning was the difference as Oklahoma State improved to 28-16 on the season; Oregon State fell to 31-14-1.
Also having a big day at the plate for the Pokes were Trevor Boone, who was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Andrew Navigato, who also had three hits and drove in a pair of runs.
Jake Lyons earned the win in relief on the mound to improve to 3-2 as the right-hander worked 3 2/3 innings and struck out three.
Ben Leeper racked up four strikeouts over the final two innings to earn his fifth save of the season.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead with three runs on five hits in their first at bat. Hueston Morrill led off the game with a single and after a one-out double by Colin Simpson, Navigato ripped a double down the left-field line to bring home Oklahoma State's first two runs. Two batters later, Boone picked up an RBI on an infield single to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage.
Oregon State cut into the Cowboys' lead in the bottom of the first, collecting four singles against Brett Standlee, including an RBI hit by Alex McGarry that made the score 3-1.
The Beavers continued to get to Standlee in the second, reeling off three-straight hits with one out to add another run and cut their deficit to 3-2 before tying the game on an RBI groundout by Zack Zalesky.
The score remained knotted at 3-3 until the fifth. Once again, Oregon State collected three consecutive hits to plate a run, with Preston Jones' RBI single putting the home team on top for the first time in the series.
Oregon State was not done as it added two more runs in the inning, on an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly, to double its lead and take a 6-3 advantage into the sixth.
The Cowboys would not be down long, however. Navigato was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth and following a double by Carson McCusker, Boone smashed a three-run home run to center field to tie the score at 6-6. The blast was Boone's team-leading 16th of the season.
Oklahoma State regained the lead for good in the eighth. After back-to-back singles by Navigato and McCusker to open the inning, Jake Mulholland retired the next two Cowboys.
But with runners on second and third, the Beavers intentionally walked Alix Garcia to bring Cabbiness to the plate. After working a full count, the Oklahoma State right fielder delivered a two-RBI single to center field to put the Pokes on top, 8-6.
Oklahoma State returns to Big 12 Conference action Friday when the Cowboys open the Bedlam Series against Oklahoma. Friday's opener is set for 7 p.m. at Tulsa's ONEOK Field, with Saturday's contest in Oklahoma City's Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Sunday's finale is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch in Norman.
