CORVALLIS, Ore. – Jensen Elliott and Peyton Battenfield combined on a two-hit shutout of No. 2 Oregon State Friday as 21st-ranked Oklahoma State opened the series with a 1-0 win over the Beavers at Goss Stadium.
The win was the Cowboys' first over a top-five ranked opponent since beating No. 3 Texas Tech on May 24, 2017, as Oklahoma State snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 26-16 on the season.
The shutout marked the fifth of the season for the Cowboys as Elliott and Battenfield kept the Oregon State hitters at bay throughout the contest.
Elliott worked seven innings and allowed just two hits, both singles, to improve to 6-3. The right-hander struck out four and walked two and did not allow a hit through the first 4 2/3 innings before surrendering an infield single in the fifth.
Battenfield earned his first save of the season as he worked the final two innings and struck out the first three hitters in the Beavers' lineup in the ninth to secure the win.
Oklahoma State plated the only run it would need in the seventh on an RBI single by Alix Garcia. The Cowboys finished the contest with nine hits, with Hueston Morrill and Christian Funk leading the way with two apiece.
A pitching duel between Elliott and Oregon State southpaw Brandon Eisert ensued over the first six innings as both hurlers kept their opponent off the scoreboard.
Oklahoma State finally broke the scoreless drought in the seventh. Andrew Navigato led off the inning with a double to right-center field before the next two Cowboys were retired. But Alix Garcia would come up with a clutch hit as he delivered an RBI single just inside the right-field line to put the Pokes up 1-0.
Oregon State (31-12-1) threatened to get on the board in bottom of the seventh. But after a walk and a two-out single by pinch hitter Zack Zalesky put the tying run on second base, Elliott got a big strikeout on a swing-and-miss by Tyler Malone to end the inning.
Battenfield retired all six batters he faced over the final three frames to seal the victory.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 8:05 p.m. CST.
