FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Oklahoma State's men's golf team stretched its lead to 25 shots on Sunday at the NCAA Championship during the third round of action at Blessings Golf Club.
Through 54 holes, the Cowboys stand at 12-under-par 852 after posting a 2-under 286. Texas and Stanford share second place at 13-over 877. Oklahoma is fourth with an 880 tally at the par-72, 7,550-yard layout.
A trio of Cowboys are vying to become the school's ninth individual NCAA champion, and first since 2006, with Matthew Wolff, Austin Eckroat and Zach Bauchou all among the top five on the leaderboard.
"It's pretty awesome. It just shows anyone on our team can play well. We've been taught to do that and I think we're executing nicely," Wolff said.
In the top spot, Wolff stands two clear of Eckroat after posting a 70 during his third round for a 7-under total of 209. The sophomore's outward nine included birdies at the second and fifth. Wolff's lone blemish on the card was a bogey at the 13th. However, he bounced back with a birdie at the par-5 15th.
"I actually didn't know that I was leading, but it feels really nice. When you're leading, you're obviously doing something right. We've got a lot of great players out here, some of the top amateurs in the world, and it's a really hard course. I think being consistent, putting myself in the right places, and learning the course each day is helping. We've still got one more round, so we'll see how it goes," Wolff said.
After opening with consecutive 69s, Eckroat carded a 73 on Sunday to stand alone in second place at 211. The sophomore battled back from a double bogey at the fourth with birdies at Nos. 6 and 7 before turning in 1-over 37. After carding bogeys at the 12th and 14th, he rallied with birdies at the 15th and the 18th hole for an even-par inward nine.
Bauchou made the turn in 1-over 37 before rattling off four consecutive birdies on Nos. 12-15 to climb into the top five as well. He stands in a tie for fifth place at 2-under 214.
Junior Viktor Hovland posted a 76 to finish the day tied for 29th place at 221.
Senior Hayden Wood carded his low round of the event with a 1-over 73 to stand at 228 and tied for 83rd place.
The field was cut to 15 teams and will be trimmed to eight following tomorrow's fourth round to set the match play bracket.
The Cowboys will begin their fourth round tomorrow at 12:28 p.m. (CST) and will be grouped with Stanford and Texas. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
