Hassan Abdi Wins Fourth Big 12 Title
May 10, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
NORMAN, Oklahoma –Oklahoma State's Hassan Abdi capped off day one of the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships by coming from behind to win his second career Big 12 title in the men's 10,000 meters and his fourth Big 12 title overall.
Abdi won the race with a time of 29:31.42, and ran a 58-second split in the final lap to pass Iowa State's Edwin Kurgat. Cowboy Noah Gade finished 10th place in the race to improve upon his 16th place finish at the Big 12 Championships a year ago.
"What can you even say about Hassan?", head coach Dave Smith said. "He just has a will to win that you can't coach, you can't teach, you can't give it to somebody. They either have it, or they don't."
Sophomore Taylor Somers turned in an impressive performance for the Cowgirls in the women's 10,000 meters to place third and earn All-Big 12 honors for the first time in her career. Katherine Ruck placed 10th for the Cowgirls as well.
"I thought Taylor did a fantastic job," Smith said. "I thought she executed her plan perfectly, it was conservative the whole way through and then she really ripped that last 800 (meters), securing third place."
Jake Dyer, Cole Verble and William Edmonds competed in the men's decathlon on day one. Dyer currently sits in seventh place in the overall standings after a third place finish in shot put and a fifth place finish in the 100 meters. Edmonds ran a new personal-best 49.69 to finish first in the 400 Meters. Edmonds currently sits in 12th place and Verble occupies 10th place in the standings.
In the women's heptathlon, Megan Mann set new personal-best marks in the 100-meter hurdles, shot put and the 200 meters. She is in 11th place in the overall standings entering tomorrow.
OSU will return to action tomorrow morning for day two of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships with events starting at 10 a.m.
