STILLWATER – Oklahoma State dropped its series opener to West Virginia Friday night as the 23^rd-ranked Cowboys suffered an 11-1 loss at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

The Cowboys were kept off the scoreboard until the ninth inning as they fell to 18-10 overall and 5-2 in Big 12 Conference play.

Jensen Elliott took the loss for OSU, working three innings and giving up five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits to fall to 3-2 on the season.

Offensively, the Cowboys struggled against WVU ace Alek Manoah as the right-hander improved to 4-2 with eight shutout innings in which he allowed only three hits and racked up 11 strikeouts.

Noah Sifrit had two of OSU's four hits in the contest and scored the Cowboys' lone run in the ninth when, after leading off the ninth inning with a triple, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Max Hewitt. Sifrit also pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his third appearance of the season.

Elliott ran into trouble early. After West Virginia leadoff man Tyler Doanes reached third to start the game on a Cowboy error and came in to score on a fielder's choice, an RBI single and a bases loaded walk issued plated the second and third Mountaineer runs before a strikeout and groundout with the bases loaded got the Pokes out of the inning.

The Mountaineers (18-11, 3-4) added runs in both the second and third frames to drive Elliott from the game, but C.J. Varela came out of the bullpen and allowed five runs over his first two innings as WVU pushed its lead to 10-0 after five.

WVU finished with 17 hits, the most allowed by the Cowboys this season, with Marques Inman's 4-for-5, four-RBI performance leading the way.

The two teams will be back in action Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium with first pitch slated for 2:05 p.m.
