STILLWATER –Oklahoma State knocked off Dallas Baptist, 6-3, Tuesday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium to avenge a loss to the Patriots last month.
The Cowboys (22-13, 7-5) were led offensively by Trevor Boone, who ended the night 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, highlighted by a towering two-run home run to get OSU on the scoreboard. Colin Simpson also homered, while Christian Funk continued his recent surge by driving in a pair of runs.
On the mound, OSU used six different pitchers in the win, with John Kelly earning his first-career victory with an inning of relief. Logan Gragg worked a perfect ninth to earn his second save.
OSU struck first, plating two runs on a Boone no-doubt home run in the bottom of the second. A single to right from Cade Cabbiness set the table for Boone, who launched his 10th home run of the season with a blast to left field that hit off of the Cowgirl softball press box beyond the outfield wall.
C.J. Varela made his fifth start of the season for the Cowboys but went just 2 2/3 innings after issuing a hit and two walks to begin the third.
Peyton Battenfield relieved Varela in the third inning with two outs and the bases loaded and issued a walk that brought home the first DBU run of the game before inducing a fly ball for the third out of the inning to escape further damage.
Kelly replaced Battenfield to open the fifth. Following a leadoff single, a Cowboy error on a potential inning-ending double play and a wild pitch allowed Blayne Jones to come across to score and tie the game at 2-2.
The tie did not last long thanks to Simpson, who launched a go-ahead solo shot to right-center field to put OSU in front 3-2. For Simpson, it was his eighth home run of the season and team-leading 35th RBI.
Nate Peterson took the mound for OSU in the sixth and after issuing a leadoff walk, the southpaw settled in to get a fly out and a strikeout before a pickoff move that caught the runner at first trying to steal.
OSU added to its lead in the sixth, using a leadoff single from Boone to spark the inning. Boone followed up his single by stealing his fourth bag of the year to move into scoring position. Noah Sifrit then drew a walk before a throwing error by DBU third baseman Jackson Glenn plated Boone.
Following a pitching change for the Patriots, Funk, fresh off earning Big 12 Player of the Week honors, lined a two-run single just inside the first-base line off the glove of Andres Sosa that brought home Sifrit and Hueston Morrill to make it a 6-2 OSU lead.
DBU responded right away. Jake Lyons, who recorded the final two outs of the seventh for OSU, gave up a solo home run to Glenn to lead off the eighth inning that cut the OSU lead to 6-3, but Lyons got two Patriots to fly out before getting a strikeout to end the inning.
Gragg turned in a dominant ninth inning on the mound for the Cowboys, striking out the first man he faced before getting a groundout and a fly out to secure the win.
OSU returns to action Thursday when they host Texas in a Big 12 Conference series opener at Reynolds Stadium. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
