STILLWATER – Oklahoma State had its four-game winning streak snapped Sunday afternoon as the Cowboys dropped a 5-3 contest to Southeastern Louisiana at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 12-6 on the season, while SLU is now 7-12.
"There were a number of swings and momentum back and forth over the course of nine innings, and we had our opportunities, that's for sure," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "We built some innings and weren't able to close them out, and they did a nice job there at the end of hanging on.
"Disappointed with the result. We had some situations throughout the game that if we were a little bit better here or there, the score might have turned out differently. You usually get in this game what you earn, and in today's game some small details eluded us and ended up costing us a run here and there."
Mitchell Stone started on the mound for OSU, but the southpaw struggled to find the strike zone, walking three batters and giving up three runs in just 1 1/3 innings of work as he suffered his first loss to fall to 1-1.
Offensively, Christian Funk was 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in all three OSU runs. Andrew Navigato also had a pair of hits for the Cowboys.
The Lions pushed across one run in the first inning to take an early lead and then added two more in the second before Funk got the Pokes on the board in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Bryce Carter and cut the OSU deficit to 3-1.
SLU added another in the fourth on a Connor Manola RBI single, but the Pokes answered in the bottom of the inning when Funk ripped a two-run double to left field to pull OSU to within one at 4-3.
The Lions were able to get their final run in the fifth on a sac-fly off the bat of Brennan Breaud.
OSU struggled to produce with men in scoring position all afternoon, leaving nine runners stranded on base, and the Cowboys left two runners on in both the seventh and ninth innings. The Pokes brought the winning run to the plate in the ninth in the form of Colin Simpson, but he grounded out to end the game.
The Cowboys return to action Tuesday at Dallas Baptist for a 6:30 p.m. contest before opening Big 12 Conference play Friday against Kansas State at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
