STILLWATER – Oklahoma State came up short of a series sweep Sunday as the Cowboys dropped a 5-4 contest to Wright State at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The loss snapped OSU's four-game winning streak as the 18th-ranked Cowboys fell to 5-2 on the season; Wright State, which scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth inning, is now 2-3.
Offensively, the Cowboys recorded 10 hits in the contest, with Hueston Morrill, Carson McCusker and Cade Cabbiness collecting two apiece.
Joe Lienhard suffered the loss in relief on the mound as the senior right-hander fell to 0-1 on the season.
WSU took the game's initial lead in the first inning against OSU southpaw Mitchell Stone as the Raiders took advantage of a pair of walks and went up 1-0 on an RBI fielder's choice by Peyton Burdick.
But the Cowboys weren't down long. Morrill walked to lead off the bottom of the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Max Hewitt. Up next, Colin Simpson ripped an RBI single past the shift into right field to tie the score at 1-1.
The Raiders plated another run on a pair of hits off Stone in the fourth, but once again OSU answered in the bottom of the frame.
This time, it was McCusker delivering an RBI triple into the right-center field gap to knot things at 2-2 before Cabbiness roped an RBI double just inside the right-field line to give OSU its first lead.
OSU held that 3-2 lead until the seventh when the Raiders mounted a rally against Jake Lyons, who came on in relief of Stone with two on and nobody out in the fifth.
After keeping WSU off the scoreboard for two innings, Lyons gave up three-straight hits, including a two-RBI single by Seth Gray that gave the Raiders a 4-3 seventh-inning lead. Lyons finished his outing with six strikeouts in three innings of work.
Once again, OSU answered in the bottom of the inning to draw even, getting an RBI single from Christian Funk to tie the score at 4-4. Later in the inning, the Cowboys loaded the bases with one out but failed to score when McCusker grounded into an inning-ending double play.
The score remained tied until the ninth when back-to-back, two-out singles by Gray and Chase Slone put Raiders on the corners. Leeper then came out of the bullpen but uncorked a wild pitch that brought home Slone with what proved to be the winning run.
In its final at bat, OSU got a leadoff walk from Hewitt, but pinch runner Noah Sifrit was stranded at second base as the Cowboys' final comeback attempt came up short.
OSU returns to action Tuesday when the Cowboys host in-state rival Oral Roberts at 4:05 p.m.
