STILLWATER – Oklahoma State opened its weekend series against Wright State with a 4-0 win Friday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The win was the third in a row for the 18th-ranked Cowboys, who improved to 4-1 on the season; WSU fell to 1-2.
Jensen Elliott earned the starting nod for the Cowboys and picked up his first win of the season and his first since March 12, 2017. The junior right-hander, who missed most of the 2017 and 2018 seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery, struck out five and allowed just four hits over six innings of work to move to 1-0 on the year and 13-3 in his career.
Elliott, Joe Lienhard and Ben Leeper combined for the shutout, which equals OSU's total from last season when the Cowboys' lone shutout came in the Bedlam Series opener against Oklahoma.
"Wright State is a very difficult team to pitch to — they return a lot of really good hitters from last season and scored a bunch of runs last weekend against Ole Miss; those kids can play," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "We came out today and pitched extremely well, played good defense and had just enough timely hitting — that's a good recipe for success."
Dylan Gardner got the Cowboys started offensively against the Raiders in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double in the right-center field gap that scored Bryce Carter. OSU pushed one more run across the plate in the inning when Cade Cabbiness singled to left field to make the score 2-0.
OSU added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh when Christian Funk delivered a clutch two-strike, two-out RBI double to right-center field to plate Colin Simpson and Trevor Boone and extend the Cowboys' lead to 4-0.
Lienhard struck out three Raiders in two scoreless relief innings, and Leeper threw a perfect to seal the win for the Pokes.
The two teams return to action at Reynolds Stadium on Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
