Cowgirl DMR Team Blows By Previous Record
January 25, 2019 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER— The Oklahoma State women's distance medley relay team shattered the school record at the UW Invitational, and Jacob Fincham-Dukes and Bailey Golden highlighted the OSU track and field teams' efforts at the Razorback Invitational.
The Cowgirl DMR squad of Molly Sughroue, Nicolette Dixon, Kaylee Dodd and Sinclaire Johnson ran a 10:55.93, setting not only the OSU record in the event, but also setting the meet record.
They broke the school record by almost six seconds and broke the meet record by almost seven seconds.
Johnson threw down a massive anchor leg to beat out Boise State and BYU, who also ran the race in under 11 minutes. Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Dave Smith said Johnson's Mile anchor leg clocked in at around 4:30.
"Over the last nine years, we've had a really good group of middle distance runner, probably some of the best in NCAA," Smith said. "We've had really talented runners and for those girls to not only break a record, but to break it by six seconds this early in the season is testament to how hard they've worked and how much preparation they did over break. I'm proud of them. They showed they're mature, seasoned athletes. They just got it done."
In Arkansas, Fincham-Dukes competed in his first long jump competition of the season, but showed no signs of rust. He jumped a mark of 7.85m/25-9.25, which earned him a runner-up finish to only Bowerman award finalist Grant Holloway.
Assistant coach Josh Langley said the senior jumper was the highlight of the day in Arkansas.
"Coach Zivile Pukstiene and him did a great job working together getting him ready for his season opener," Langley said. "They always want more and I think Jacob felt like he lost a few centimeters in his landing. It's exciting to see him back on the runway and opening up with a nice series of jumps."
Golden broke the OSU record in the pentathlon, scoring 3,564 points. Her best performance of the day came in the high jump section of the pentathlon. She cleared 1.75m/5-8.75, a mark that tied for second-best in school history.
Golden has proven high jump to be her expertise. The freshman has now cleared 1.70m/5-7 or higher at least three times in her first collegiate season.
Langley said her breakout came in the 60-meter hurdles where she set a new personal best thanks to continued practice of getting out of the blocks.
"It was a great start for Bailey in the pentathlon," Langley said. "It's her first one ever, so just gaining the experience is a huge benefit. Her hurdle race was the big boost to the day, that was a sizable PR."
Aaliyah Birmingham hit the track for the first time since setting the Cowgirl 60-meters record. She ran a time of 24.20 in the 200 meters. That time is the third-best in school history.
Jocelen Ruth threw a season-best mark in the women's weight throw. Her throw of 16.32m/53-6.5 is the first throw to break the 16-meter barrier this season.
Schuyler Wood-Hilderbrandt had a top-five performance in the women's long jump. She jumped 5.83m/19-1.5 to take fifth place.
The OSU track and field squads return to action at 11:35 a.m. on Saturday in Arkansas. The group in Seattle hits the track again at Noon on Saturday.
