Cowboys Lead After Day One At Olympia Fields

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — Oklahoma State's men's golf team fired an opening 273 on Friday to share first place at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club.
The Cowboys' 7-under total knotted them with California for the top spot on the leaderboard at the par-70, 7,281-yard layout. South Carolina and UNLV held the third spot through 18 holes after carding matching 3-over 283 totals.
Coming off his first career victory in OSU's season opener at The Carmel Cup, sophomore Matthew Wolff fired an opening 65 to lead UNLV's Justin Kim by one shot. Wolff's 5-under day added to an impressive start to the fall, which has also seen him card rounds of 65, 66 and 68 at Pebble Beach to finish at 17-under 199 and pick up his first victory as a Cowboy.
Wolff began his round on Friday with three consecutive pars before carding birdies at Nos. 4 and 7. His lone bogey of the day came at the ninth, but he quickly answered with a birdie at the 10th. He moved to 3-under for the day with a birdie at the 13th before logging an eagle at the par-5 15th on his way to his 5-under total.
Classmate Austin Eckroat also finished the day inside the top five, carding a 68 to come in tied for fifth place.
Junior Viktor Hovland and senior Zach Bauchou each signed for even-par 70s to stand in a tie for 13th place.
Senior Hayden Wood's 73 tied him for 31st place.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. (CST) and will be grouped with California and South Carolina.
