Cowboys Rise in Week 1 Coaches’ Poll
September 11, 2018 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILWATER—The Oklahoma State men's cross country team jumped two spots into No. 23 and the Cowgirls remained at 26th in the second week of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coaches' Poll, the organization announced Tuesday.
The Cowboys were ranked 23rd, which is two spots better than they were ranked in the preseason poll. The improvement comes after OSU ran at the Hurricane Invitational and finished in fourth place. Bryce Quigley led the Cowboys at the season-opening meet, finishing the four-mile race in 20:55.
The Cowboys were the second-highest ranked Big 12 team and only Iowa State sits ahead of them at No. 5. The Cyclones and Cowboys were the only teams in the conference to be ranked after the first week, but Texas did receive votes.
On the women's side, the Cowgirls remained in the No. 26 ranking after their first week of competition. OSU kicked of its season with a second-place finish at the Hurricane Invitational. Sinclaire Johnson took home the individual title and Grace Baker took third in the two-mile race.
The Cowgirls were one of three teams in the Big 12 to earn a ranking. Iowa State dropped one spot to No. 18 and Texas dropped two spots from the preseason poll to No. 29.
Both teams will be training for a couple of weeks, but will get back on the course at 11 a.m. on Sept. 28 in Madison, Wisconsin, for the Nuttycombe Invitational. The early-season race will give OSU a preview of the national championship course.
