PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland won a pair of matches on Thursday at Pebble Beach Golf Links to advance to the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Hovland, a rising junior for the Cowboys, advanced to the match play bracket after posting scores of 71 and 73. On Wednesday, he knocked off teammate Hayden Wood, 3 and 2, in the first round to advance.
In the round of 32, Hovland battled Harrison Ott. After Ott took the initial lead at the second, Hovland won three of the next four to move in front 2 up. However, Ott won the next two to square the match before Hovland won the ninth to take a 1-up margin into the second nine.
After Hovland won the 11th, Ott took the 13th to get within one. Hovland claimed the 15th and halved the next two holes en route to a 2 and 1 victory.
Hovland's round of 16 match resulted in an impressive victory for the first-team All-American, who was the last match out, but first to finish as he posted a 7 and 6 win over fellow Norwegian Kristoffer Reitan.
After winning the first, Hovland took Nos. 4, 6, 7, and 8 to grab a 5-up lead at the turn. After winning the 10th and 11th, he halved to 12th to close out the match.
Hovland will take on Austin Squires tomorrow with a berth in the semifinals on the line.
