DeLAND, Fla. – Oklahoma State dropped into the loser's bracket at the NCAA DeLand Regional Saturday night as top-seeded and No. 11 national seed Stetson knocked off the Cowboys, 10-3, at Melching Field.
With the loss, OSU fell to 30-25-1 and will face South Florida in a Regional elimination game Sunday at 12 p.m. CST. With a win, the Cowboys would advance to the Regional finals and would need to defeat Stetson Sunday night and Monday to earn a berth in next week's Super Regionals.
The Cowboys struck out 14 times against SU ace Logan Gilbert, who entered the game third nationally with 143 strikeouts, as the Hatters won their 17th-straight game to improve to 47-11. Gilbert improved to 11-1 with a seven-inning effort in which he allowed two runs on five hits.
OSU managed just six hits in the contest while striking out 19 times. The Cowboys got home runs from Andrew Rosa, who had two hits and a pair of RBIs on the night, and Cade Cabbiness.
Joe Lienhard took the loss on the mound to fall to 5-3 on the season as the right-hander worked the first three innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three and also walking three.
Stetson took the game's initial lead in its first at bat. After Jacob Koos drew a two-out walk, Brooks Wilson lined a single to right field and a hustling Koos scored from first to put the Hatters up 1-0.
The Cowboys trailed until the third when Rosa took Gilbert deep, crushing his second home run of the season just inside the foul pole in left field to tie the score at 1-1.
SU quickly answered, however, loading the bases in the fourth against Lienhard following a walk, hit by pitch and single. That brought Jensen Elliott out of the bullpen, and after a strikeout, the sophomore righty induced a ground ball to shortstop. The Cowboys got the out at second but couldn't complete the double play as the go-ahead run came home to put the Hatters back up, 2-1.
A two-out rally in the fifth helped seal OSU's fate. The first run came via a passed ball before a three-run homer by Jorge Arenas put the Hatters up 6-1. SU then got back-to-back hits from Jonathan Meola and Austin Hale to add another score and take a six-run advantage.
In only his fourth appearance of the season coming back from Tommy John surgery, Elliott tossed a season-high four innings and gave up six runs on six hits.
SU added a run in the sixth and two in the eighth while the Cowboys' final runs came on Cabbiness third round tripper of the season in the seventh and an RBI double by Rosa in the ninth.
