STILLWATER – Oklahoma State suffered a 7-3 loss to No. 10 Texas Tech in its regular season finale Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The 14th-ranked Cowboys finish Big 12 Conference play with a 16-8 mark and in second place in the standings behind league champion Texas. OSU is 29-22-1 overall and will open play at the Big 12 Baseball Championship Wednesday against No. 7-seed West Virginia at 4 p.m. in Oklahoma City.
TTU (38-15, 15-9) used a pair of three-run innings to secure the win Saturday and hand Jonathan Heasley the loss. The OSU starter allowed seven runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings; he struck out four and walked three while falling to 3-6.
The Red Raiders jumped out to a quick lead with a three-run first inning. Gabe Holt led off the game with a home run before a ground-rule double by Zach Rheams four batters later made the score 3-0.
OSU tied the score with its lone runs in the game in the third. Following back-to-back, one-out singles by Andrew Rosa and Max Hewitt, a sacrifice fly by Trevor Boone plated the Cowboys' first run. Up next, Matt Kroon blasted a two-run homer to center field, with his 11th round tripper of the season tying things at 3-3.
The visitors regained the lead for good in their next at bat, getting a two-out RBI single from Braxton Fulton, before rallying for three runs in the fifth. After retiring the first two batters in that inning, Heasley hit Grant Little with a pitch before Rheams collected another RBI with a double. The Red Raiders then got an infield single before a Cameron Warren double brought home two more runs to extend the lead to 7-3.
The Cowboys loaded the bases in both the fifth and seventh innings, each time with two outs and Colin Simpson at the plate. But OSU could not take advantage as Simpson struck out in the fifth before sending a deep fly ball to center field that was caught at the wall by Cody Farhat to end the seventh.
